Product Description

Product Description

With an Introduction by M.J. Elliott. My eyes, perversely shaken open, gazed for an instant upon a sight which no human creature could even imagine without panic, fear and physical exhaustion... A wax museum in London boasts a new exhibit, which no man has seen and remained sane... A businessman is trapped in a train carriage with a madman who claims to have created a new and efficient method of capital punishment... A doctor plans a horrible revenge, using as his murder weapon an insect believed capable of consuming the human soul... Within these pages, some of H P Lovecraft's more obscure works of horror and science fiction can be found, including several fantastic tales from his celebrated Cthulhu Mythos. No true Lovecraft aficionado dare be without this volume. The majority of the stories in this edition appeared previously in The Loved Dead (ISBN 9781840226225)

This is a nice little book. It contains all of Lovecraft's more obscure short fiction, most of the stories are 'collaborations' with other authors, which usually means that someone else would submit an idea to HP and he would pen it for them. The only collaboration omitted from this collection is The Loved Dead, which seems to have been removed for legal reasons.

I could only recommend this to Lovecraft fans, it's not the best of his work and would be a terrible introduction to his writings. If you're curious about Lovecraft, buy the Penguin Classics 'Call Of Cthulhu and other weird stories' for a great introduction to his work, it's volume 1 of a 3 part series which collects all his major works. If you have those 3 combined with this book and 'The Loved Dead', then you have his complete works of fiction.

This collection of short stories adds to the more common body of Lovecraft's work and will be appreciated by his fans. As these stories were co-written by Lovecraft, rather than entirely his own work, there is a slightly different tone to them, which enhances many of them whilst remaining well within Lovecraft's oeuvre (Lovecraft's failing was that his writing could not, in many cases, keep pace with the startling originality of his ideas). We see here the continued development of the Cthulhu Mythos (The Horror In the Museum) and also the beginnings of science fiction writing (In the Walls of Eryx). The themes which originated with Lovecraft have been taken up by other writers and subsequently whole new worlds have been developed; and it started with these tales. To fully appreciate them, don't try to read them all at once; keep the book by your bedside and dip in whenever you want a glimpse into other worlds.
