Reviews

United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Mono ), WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: This updated version of VOLPONE stars comic charmer Rex Harrison as Cecil Fox, a sly, wealthy man who pretends to be dying in order to test the love of his former mistresses. But a household full of greed and jealousy leads to trouble, as Cecil Fox soon finds out when he gets in over his head and one of his heiresses decides to speed his death along a bit. During Harrison's hot decade of the 1960s, in which he played some of his most famous roles, including the Oscar-winning Henry Higgins in MY FAIR LADY and the title character of DOCTOR DOLITTLE, Harrison teamed up twice with director Joseph L. Mankiewicz, known for directing--and often writing-- touchingly deep films about the complexities of human relationships, such as ALL ABOUT EVE and THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR (another Harrison vehicle). During Mankiewicz and Harrison's collaborations in the 1960s, Harrison first starred as the doomed Julius Caesar in the glorious, romantic epic CLEOPATRA, playing opposite Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, then later in the decade took on the role of clever, scheming Cecil Fox in THE HONEY POT. A movie that allowed both men to demonstrate the wide range of their comic talents, THE HONEY POT was Mankiewicz's final screenplay and his last film with Harrison; Mankiewicz would go on to direct only two more major films before retiring from Hollywood. ...The Honey Pot (1967) ( Mr. Fox of Venice ) ( The Honeypot )

A millionaire (Rex Harrison) concocts a devious plan to gain even more wealth by inviting three of his former lovers (Susan Hayward as a Texas heiress, Capucine as a princess, Edie Adams as a movie star) to his Venetian palazzo and playing them against each other. But when one of them dies, the joke may be on him. Joseph L. Mankiewicz's adaptation of the 17th century Ben Jonson comedy VOLPONE (via several other permutations) isn't as sharp as his other dialogue driven films like ALL ABOUT EVE or A LETTER TO THREE WIVES and at a running time of over two hours (almost 20 minutes have been cut including Herschel Bernardi`s role even though he still retains billing), it can't sustain the suspense but there's just enough style and wit to moderately hold one's interest. With Cliff Robertson, Maggie Smith and Adolfo Celi and a frequently effective score courtesy of John Addison.

The British DVD courtesy of Optimum offers a nice and clean transfer its original 1.85 wide screen transfer.

Smart, sophisticated 60's comedy from the great American writer/director Joseph L. Mankiewicz; one of his more neglected efforts. You can't imagine better casting than Harrison in this one, and his female antagonists are delightful to see on screen. A most conspicuous pleasure is the marvelous score by John Addison. A very nice anamorphic print adds to the pleasure of joining Mr. Harrison's company.

This film has slipped into near oblivion but it deserves better.
A good story, a good cast. A crime but no violence and no F.. words. What a change!
