Product Description

Review

A professional guide to "making the most of your living space". Style by style, room by room, element by element, this is the ultimate tour of fashionable interiors today. Contemporary, classical, masculine, feminine, old and new, all tastes are lavishly displayed in this comprehensive book. With designer advice accompanying the superb photographs, the reader can learn how to spot the good side of a "bad room", how to hide faults and enhance bonuses. Choose your style from simple and natural, sleek and modern, country and rustic, contemporary elegance or old and new and follow on for room-by-room ideas. Planning the spaces to maximise their use, painting to draw in or expand the size and soft furnishings to blend effortlessly with the rest of the d cor. Be it the practical kitchen, bathroom or work space or the relaxing bedroom, living room or dining areas, the five design experts behind this work clearly explain interior design techniques and strategies to ensure you get the result YOU want. As Caroline Clifton-Mogg says in her introduction "it is a natural instinct to want to live in a home that is comfortable, well-appointed and finished with decorative pieces and colours which add beauty and please us. But, instinctive as this desire may be, getting our home to be more dream and less disaster does not necessarily come easily. It can seem a daunting task". So it you are stuck for ideas or do not know where to begin, this book should enable you to draw up a plan and execute it with confidence to achieve your desires. - Lucy Watson

The book is a heafty hardback, bigger than A4 with 253 pages. The book is split into several chapters, the first one is a simple collection of inspirational interiors on several themes, then the following 8 deal with types of room, kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, work spaces childrens rooms and halls and awkward spaces. The book then moves onto the essential elements of creating a stylish home, and has chapters on colour, lighting, flooring, storage and display, window treatments and soft furnishings. It ends with a directory of suppliers, and an index.

I was worried this book was going to be all glossy pictures and no substance but actually there is quite a lot of text. The author clearly knows how and why to design a space in such a way to create different effects. All the pictures are well backed up and explained, and you can see how the techniques he talks about are actually at work in the room.

The book will certainly make you more aware of how you layout your home and has a lot of very good ideas for making the most of the space and light you have. What suprised me about the book is so few of the homes featured are show home style, mostly they are very real living spaces, and the book actually takes into account that minimalist doesn't work for most families!

I have to say I was impressed with this book, and the best way to describe it would be as a real home design bible. All the looks are very achievable, there is nothing too new and shocking, just good, honest homes.
