Book Description

3 Mar 2014
The Great War was the first in our history to have a deep impact on every aspect of civilian life. In an overdue attempt to portray the real effect of the War on life at home, David Bilton examines all the major events of the period and charts their effect on everyday life for those trying to live a normal existence. Examples are the air raids by Zeppelins and aircraft, rationing and shortages, recruitment, changes in employment habits, censorship. Extensive use is made of personal accounts and the author draws on many photographs, newspaper and magazine material and ephemera to make this very informative and atmospheric.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful little reference work 25 April 2014
Format:Paperback
OK, so it may not go into huge detail about the Home Front in The Great War, but it's good enough and there are some useful snippets in here such as a table showing the number of men in reserved occupations, British merchant vessels lost by enemy action, percentage food price increases between 1914 and 1916 etc. There are lots of interesting little nuggets here and with a five hour journey ahead of me on a train later today, this is going to be a handy companion. Recommended as an introduction to life at home between 1914 and 1918 - and profusely illustrated.

3.0 out of 5 stars The home front in the great war 12 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Somewhat superficial does not go into any thing in much depth. Section on Hull quite interesting but the last part of the final section was tedious and lacked personal insights. There are much more interesting books on the Home Front available.
