Product Description

CD Description

Paul Williams co-authored some of the best known and
biggest-selling pop hits of the 20th century, including
'We've Only Just Begun,' 'Rainy Days and Mondays,' and
'Let Me Be The One' by The Carpenters.

His compositions have also been recorded by Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Three Dog Night, The Monkees, and literally thousands of others. Before all that, he and brother Mentor Williams--himself the author of Dobie Gray's 1973 hit 'Drift Away'--were members of a short-lived psychedelic pop outfit called The Holy Mackerel.

This re-mastered and expanded reissue of their 1968 eponymous LP includes 10 bonus tracks, 9 of which are making their CD debut, including the original demo of the Roger Nichols co-written 'Bitter Honey.'

The deluxe, full-colour booklet also includes rare, unpublished photos and extensive liner notes by DAVID PONAK and STEVE STANLEY, featuring the participation of PAUL WILLIAMS, co-writer ROGER NICHOLS, and other band members.

Product Description

New 2010 remastered reissue of 1968 psych-pop gem featuring Paul Williams! Includes 10 bonus tracks,9 of which are previously unreleased on CD.

I bought this CD on the basis of the brilliant song mentioned above. I was hoping that any band which could come up with such a song could hopefully come up with something else equally good. I'm glad to say I was not disappointed. Of the 12 songs on the original album from 1968, I'd say 8 are definitely worth having, and some of the 10 bonus tracks, singles, demos and outtakes are better than some album tracks. For such a cheap price too you can't go wrong. Although it's hard to neatly categorize their musical style, it's strongly recommended to any fan of late 60s acoustic rock with a psychedelic edge.

Holy Mackerel - self-titled (Collector's Choice) 1 Jan 2012
By Mike Reed - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Originally released in 1968, this was the sunshine pop band's only album. Looks to be one of Paul William's early works. With this CD reissue, you get the lp's initial twelve songs + ten added bonus tracks for your listening pleasure. Most impressive cuts are "The Lady Is Waiting" (both versions), the inspiring "Somewhere In Arizona At 4:30 AM - Restaurant Song", the country-like "The Wild Side Of Life", "Love For Everyone" and the somewhat stunning "Listen To The Voice" (truly, great flute work). Line-up: Paul Williams - lead vocals, George Hiller - guitar, harmonica, organ, banjo & vocals, Jerry Scheff - bass & vocals, Mentor Williams - rhythm guitar, Cindy Fitzpatrick - flute & vocals and Mike Cannon - drums. Recommended for fans of the Beau Brummels, Mamas & The Papas, Dillard & Clark and the Lovin' Spoonful.
