Product Description

Product Description

In 1838 and 1839, painter David Roberts traveled throughout Egypt and across the Sinai Peninsula to Petra, Jerusalem, and Palestine. The lithographs based on the sketches and paintings he produced during these trips won him fame that endures to this day.

This exceptional slipcased package presents, in two volumes, full-color plates of his original artwork, accompanied by commentary and extracts from his journals. In a fascinating comparison between the lands that Roberts depicts and their modern-day incarnations, White Star has juxtaposed new photographs from travel photographer Antonio Attini with sketches of the same site drawn by Roberts, revealing the same view, more than a century and a half later.

These pairings, accompanied by an insightful text by Fabio Bourbon, provide readers with a unique perspective on changes that have occurred in these legendary regions. The two volumes are supplemented by The Life, Works, and Travels of David Roberts, a concise yet comprehensive biography of David Roberts

Excellent 25 Feb 2011
By Degail
Format:Hardcover
In fact I bought this book on my way back from Egypt in January this year. I saw it before at the Museum in Cairo but a bit too heavy to bring back on the plane. The book gives an excellent view on was Egypt a century and more ago. Also a good view on Palestine before it became what it is today a poor colony of a merciless occupying army.
