This edition of the New Revised Standard Version strikes a balance between clarity and dignity. It is modern in the sense that it avoids excessively obscure or archaic langauge, but does not descend to embarassing paraphrase or "trendiness".
It is very nicely presented and clearly printed and the typeface is relatively large. It contains excellent additions such as maps and footnotes indicating any minor discrepancies between manuscripts.
Particularly welcome to Catholics and Orthodox will be the fact that the so-called "apocrypha" are placed in their proper place within the Old Testament, rather than appended as a "curiosity" since these books have been accepted as inspired by Christians since earliest times and were confirmed as such by Councils in the fourth century.
The Bible is excellent for general use and is not particularly expensive. Highly recommended.

The New Revised Standard Version of the Holy Bible, Catholic Edition, is renowned for succinct, elevant, and accurate translation and is widely used universally. I love this translation - the language is beautiful and authoritative.

The strong binding of the Darton, Longman and Todd publication is original and attractive in apperance. The Books of the Bible are clearly displayed and numbered and the print is sufficiently dark for easy reading. The size is good for handling.

Short footnote references are given, along with maps to show the geography of places mentioned. Charts are also presented.

Whilst individual introductions to each Biblical Book are not provided, a chapter entitled 'Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation' appears at the beginning of the Bible containing excellent notes. Also, at the start of the New Testament is a list of events entitled 'A Harmony of the Gospels'. This is very informative and helpful.

With its elegant speech and accurate biblical knowledge, this bible is easily the best of modern editions. Drawing on new-found manuscripts and archaelogical evidence (such as the Dead Sea Scrolls from the Qumran Caves), intact with its in-depth maps and diagrams I would recommend it to anybody who wishes to go through with private study, as it appears to me to be the easiest to read and to understand of all the bible translations. It uses inclusive speech when dealing with the sexes (e.g using "Humankind" instead of "Man" and "Brothers and Sisters" instead of GK "Brothers") and its footnotes provide you with excellent background information of likes of where the manuscripts used for the partiular passage where taken from (Greek, Latin, Masoretic Hebrew-Abbreviations used-GK, LT, MT) and other renderings of the text are presented with the words, "other ancient authorities...etc."

All in all, I would recommend this bible to every type of reader of every age. It is a truly brilliant translation and defintely portrays the fruits of the best scholarship around.
