Product Description

This updated text edition of the HCSB is optimized for easy reading on digital devices. Free from the visual clutter of footnotes, cross references, and other links, this edition is fast to navigate and easy to use.

The HCSB was developed by 100 scholars and English stylists from 17 denominations, who prayerfully translated what is one of the most significant Bible translations available today. The HCSB reflects linguistic advances in vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and formatting while it retains meaningful theological terms. In the HCSB you'll find God's personal name (Yahweh), the use of "Messiah" in the New Testament, and the use of "slave" in the New Testament, just to name a few examples. Also, you'll notice the contemporary speech patterns in the HCSB mean that words like "behold" and "shall" are not used. Instead, words or phrases that are common today can be found in their place.

The HCSB employs a first-of-its kind translation philosophy known as Optimal Equivalence, which seeks to achieve an optimal balance of literary precision and emotive clarity through a comprehensive analysis of the text at every level. This process assures maximum transfer of both words and thoughts contained in the original.

This basic HCSB Kindle edition was re-issued in December 2010. I did try it beforehand and returned it because it was so tiresome to find any particular book. The table of contents listed all the chapters after the book names, so the contents was perhaps 47 pages long. But at only £0.72p in England perhaps I was nit-picking.
It has been improved in December 2010 and re-issued. Although there is only a table of contents as opposed to a book index, it is now easier to navigate. The Bible text does not have endless footnote and cross-reference superscript numbers (because there aren't any) and is, consequently, easier to read.
I like the HCSB and it reads well. I'm not a Bible expert but only an occasional reader but I'd say that it fits comfortably between the ESV which requires more thought when reading, and the NLT which uses more modern language and sentence structure. My impression is that the HCSB mostly uses similarly modern language to the NLT, but manages to retain more of the original sentence order and structure. It reads well and I like it.
If you just want to 'read' the bible on the Kindle I'd say you cannot go wrong with this cheap HCSB download. That said the new HCSB Study Bible is good in Kindle format and has decent cross-referencing and navigation though I'd say that the ESV Study Bible still has the best Kindle navigation of all (but HCSB is almost as good and not defective in any way) at less than half the price of the HCSB Study Bible.
My suggestion: Buy this cheap HCSB Bible and if you like it (ignoring the higher price) then go on to buy the HCSB Study Bible.

I'm so glad there is a free version of the Bible for the Kindle.

Like other reviewers, I hadn't heard of this translation, although since downloading I have noticed that it is included on the www.BibleGateway.com list of translations which gives it more authenticity in my eyes now.

It's searchable and definitely readable. I have an NLT version at home but this is fine too.

If you want a Bible on your Kindle for any reason, I definitely suggest you download this immediately.

Thanks to the publishers for making it free!

Reads nicely 13 Jan 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I had not heard of this Bible version before but it reads very nicely. Modern enough to understand fairly easily but also flows well. Marvellous value at the price.

Modern Bible translation.
I rate this translation highly. I feel that it is certainly a translation rather than a paraphrase and I have more confidence in this Bible than some others for this reason. Read more

Easy to use :)
I like how easy it is to use. The version is easy to read. But it should have links for verses, because I find myself flickin through the book for the right verse.

Good bible, but hard to jump to verses on Kindle
There are a number of bible translations available on the Kindle, but most are not really easy to jump from verse to verse if you quickly want to lookup a text. Read more

A good, but slightly less than ideal, translation
I have given the Digital Text Edition of the HCSB (Holman Christian Standard Bible) three stars. I would have preferred to have given it three and a half. Read more

A good translation
This translation is very readable. It uses modern language, but manages to retain much of the feel and structure of older translations i.e. the text isn't dumbed down. Read more

Free but there's a catch
I have found many typographical errors in this digital version, the most common being two adjacent words being concatenated e.g. "Repent or perish" could become "Repentor perish". Read more

Easy To Read
If someone who knows me sees this review they may think it a bit odd, my being an atheist - but hold on, the bible itself whether you believe it or not is still an important book. Read more

Great translation
This is a great modern translation that aims to be as literal as possible like the ESV, but with the readability of the NIV. This is a 'normal' sized Bible. Read more
