Book Description

Love history? Know your stuff with History in an Hour.

The Holocaust, in which 11 million people died, was the largest atrocity of the 20th century and perhaps the hardest to understand. Approximately 6 million Jews and 5 million others including Roma people, Poles, Russian prisoners of war, political prisoners, homosexuals, people of colour, Jehovah's Witnesses, and various other minorities were first persecuted and then murdered.

How, both morally and logistically, had this came to happen? From received sentiments of anti-Semitism at the beginning of the 20th century, through the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party, to the Nuremberg Laws of 1935 and finally Second World War, the victimisation of these minorities intensified beyond precedent. With the complicity of a nation hatred became policy. Under the control of sadists, bureaucrats and even ordinary soldiers, irrational acts were then enacted on an industrial scale, and with the use of concentration camps, Western Europe witnessed its most shocking treatment of humanity in modern history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise and Enlightening 3 Jan. 2015
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is as good an overview of the holocaust as I have read.

It comes across in places as very factual and cold. But that is is its value. It doesn't venture into conjecture and avoids side tracking. Not until late on do we get individual pen pictures of survivors, victims and perpetrators.

Very good and I'd recommend for schools and mature readers alike.

If you are after snippets of information on this subject this is the book for you. I tend to read a lot about history and found it even had bits that I hadn't heard of before, which made this book even better for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating read - a sobering topic 16 Feb. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An excellent introduction to a sobering subject. The author has summed up the main points in an informative style - she obviously has a passion for this period in history. Highly recommended for young or new adult readers, who want to know about The Holocaust but also for those who want a short read about this tragic but fascinating topic.
