This book is, as other reviewers have commented, a moving account of the Nazi mass murders of Jews in Ukraine. However, it is not a straight history but rather the story of the remarkable activities of its remarkable author. Father Patrick Desbois is a French Catholic priest who has dedicated himself to locating and commemorating the hundreds of mass graves. He and his team of volunteers have travelled across the country, using Nazi records, post-war investigations and often heartbreaking interviews with now elderly witnesses to find and excavate sites which have often remained hidden for decades. The book is therefore a testament to the heroic commitment and compassion of Father Desbois and his colleagues.

Given the resurgence of antisemitism in Europe it is perhaps timely to read the Father's book. Not the best written historical work (but maybe something is lost in translation) it certainly brings home the horror of the German occupation but additionally the complicity of the local populations.
An important historical piece - especially when lessons from the second world war seem to be fading throughout the world.

I have read extensively and own many books 100+,about the holocaust memoirs,factual,and a few novels.This book is altogether a totally different area which it uncovers,and one i think which is not so widely known.It is enlightening, unbelievable,incredibly sad but unfortunately very true.
I recommend that all who have an interest in a full knowledge of the holocaust MUST read this book to understand how all,and by whom,the acceptance of persecutions took place.
Not all killing was done in the gas chambers,a myth which most people believe,this book clearly shows us not so.Of all the books i own this one stands out as one of the best,worst,informing us just how evil and wicked the Nazi,s,Germans and their coheres were.
NEVER FORGET and NEVER AGAIN,-------------a gentile.
