Book Description

27 July 2011
The world as Elliot Bishop and Evajean Rhodes know it is gone. Destroyed. In just two weeks, a horrific plague raged across the planet-driving its victims insane before killing them. The two survivors set out on an unimaginable journey, driven by a cryptic message from Evajean's husband: If anything terrible happens, you must get to Salt Lake City. But the pair soon discover they are not alone, and that the plague has done more than kill. The countryside between Virginia and Utah now crawls with victims who have been driven mad-violent lunatics fueled with definite yet unknown purpose. To survive, Elliot and Evajean must fight for their lives-against the crazies, against sinister forces who would stop their quest, against long-ago hidden menaces-and uncover the deeply guarded secret of those driven mad and the plague that spawned them. The secret of a destructive force unleashed on the world by one of America's most powerful religious sects...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not perfect. 31 Aug 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I'll let you in on a secret - I'm bored of zombies. After a decade of being in love with shambling corpses and brain-eating monsters, I've had enough. Why have I had enough? Because there's no originality left in the genre. There's only so much you can do with a mindless horde and a group of trapped survivors before you start repeating yourself. Aaron Ross Powell is certainly guilty of this, but he also manages to give us just enough new ideas to make his new novel, THE HOLE, refreshing.
The hole isn't a typical zombie-novel and adds enough twists and turns to the plot to create something that is bordering on unique. The origins of the apocalyptic world errs more on supernatural/religious overtones than a manmade virus or alien flu. I think it is this choice that allows the novel to achieve success and builds a foreboding atmosphere of rapture and damnation.

The plot isn't without clichés however. The two main characters follow the tried-and-tested `cross-country' journey, where they encounter the horror and destruction on a national scale as they seek a final destination. This is a good way to set up some epic set pieces and a wider arcing world for the characters to inhabit, but I couldn't help think that I had been on the journey before - from Blake Crouch's RUN to Brian Keene's THE RISING.

The cliché's continue as the two main protagonists seek refuge with a `closed community' of other survivors and this is again a premise I have seen countless times before. Fortunately, that is where things start to get fresh and interesting. The community of survivors are not just strange and overbearing, they are involved in occult practises that are at first unclear but later become evident.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not zombies, just crazies . . . 24 May 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
An okay read, The Hole fails to deliver what the opening half of the book promises. The characters, Elliot and Evajean -- and even their dog, Hope -- are believable and had me routing for them during the extent of their journey. But when it came down to the big reveal and the final confrontation, the novel faded away instead of bowing out in glory.

A shame, because the writing is good and the premise of the story equally matched. There was some confusion along the way, but nothing too distracting.

3.0 out of 5 stars HP Lovecraft and the Book of Mormon 16 Aug 2011
By Arthur LaMarche - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The story starts after the end of the world with a couple of people in Virginia. One says they have to go to Salt Lake, Utah and that is good enough for the other. The book describes their journey. It reminded me of a Lovecraft novel. Take ol' H.P. out of New England and drop him in Utah with familiarity of the Book of Mormon and you can get a feel for the story-type. There are insane religious fanatics worshipping elder gods with some really messed up monsters with just enough humanity in them to be recognizable and tear at the psyche of the characters and reader.
Along the way I kept saying to myself, "Damn, I have not done enough drugs to keep up with this story." The divine hand guiding the heroes is too heavy handed for me. Hero goes to sleep and wakes up with the "I win" button in their hands. Have it occur a couple of times and it really takes the tension away there just isn't a real threat. It is as if Bullwinkle says hey, rocky watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat. But, instead of a wand of wonder in the form of a hat, it is Batman's utility belt and always has the right gadget at just the right time.
I could not really become attached to the characters. Well, I did bond with the dog, but I am a softy that way. Maybe if I had more familiarity with the Book of Mormon it might make more sense. Sure, I have a feel for the historical and geographical references, but not enough to know of that monster that's an XYZ from chapter abc. In my opinion, the book is pretty average. It is not bad. It is not great. So, I rate it ***

5.0 out of 5 stars Does Aaron Powell have another book? 26 July 2011
By J. Samples - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I read some fiction though not a lot. I usually have trouble becoming engrossed enough in the story to continue. Hence, I don't stick with it, and many books are started but few finished. This book is different. I read two-thirds of it in one sitting, something I have not done in many years (I think the last time was reading John Updike). I stayed up through the night reading this. As the cliche goes, I could not put it down. But this is not a cliche. The book really is engrossing. But it is engrossing in a weird (and good) way. In an abstract way, what happens in the plot is not believable. But it doesn't matter! Even though I knew the events were fantastic, it did not affect my "suspension of disbelief" one iota. The human story here, I guess, is really compelling. The ending is satisfying though I can't explain why. It's a road story, and a chase story, kind of a love story, and a book that is deeper than I think I understand. But most of all, it's a great read, and a book that has convinced me for the first time in a long time that a story can be disturbing, fun, and provocative all at once. More Powell, please!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique Story. 4 Aug 2011
By Sheri A. Gambino - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
A plague has swept the world and most of the human race has died. Others that did not die became something else. Two survivors join forces to go on a journey that has called to them. They don't know where they're going but events lead them to their final destination.

I really enjoyed how all of this books mysteries and clues came together at the end. Very well written and a unique story.
