PRINCE'S 93 singles cds Hits 1 and 2 are probably THE GREATEST GREATEST hits ever.Crammed full of genuine pop classics and exhibiting a genius command of music.I have to admit one thing, whilst listening to this cd at ear splitting volume i cannot help feel sadness at how Prince has spent the last 20 years or so.
Recently things are so much better with Prince kicking it big time on high grossing tours but i see Hits2 as a definite end of a remarkable chapter.Prince never reclaimed the lost ground after this cd.
He became engulfed in a very bitter battle with Warners over control of his master tapes.I am not for one dismissing the certain power ploys of record companys but i know once Prince left Warners he stopped making classic albums.Total artistic emancipation may be satisfying for the artist but it is dodgier ground for an audience.
I believe Warners nurtured this guys career very well, giving him unprecedented privileges and freedom for a record artist.Prince seemed to want not only control of his catalogue, fair enough,
but also expected to be able to release an album whenever he wanted,at times when he was touring his current one which he actively under promoted, confusing the record buying public by almost flooding the market. To a layman Prince walking round with masks on his face, playing arena tours featuring no hits{The Live Experience] provided nothing but ridicule and confusion. To then pencil Slave on you're coiffured cheek is both ill judged and ignorant.
Then there was a truly humiliating period in the late 90s when everyone just switched off,Howard Stern famously refering to him as The Artist People Used To Care About.Things now are much better but album wise it's still unfocused in terms of distribution albums in Daily Mail, with concert tickets. The case seems to be Prince is making music for himself.
This cd is when the guy made music for the charts, for the fans and he was formidable, truly transcendant. These are some of the best songs ever recorded Raspberry Beret,If I Was Your Girlfriend,Delirious,Kiss,Purple Rain.Music that leaped genres, demographics, capturing the unbridled joy music can bring a listener.Proof that an artist needs parameters even confines.Less is definetly more.I have been confused by all the later albums,a bit resigned. But in his time and day Prince was a king. His music will remained stuck to my pysche forever.Legend.
