Like others, The Lady Vanishes, was the film I wanted here - it's a true Hitchcock Classic, with humour, suspense, a war message and some of the most recognisable scenes/characters in film history.

The Lady Vanishes is a difficult film to buy in a box-set, it's not even in the bestselling 14 disc 'Hitchcock' collection, or any other that I can find on Amazon. You can buy it singly, but for about the same price, you get four more, here.

Secret Agent is the other film here that Hitchcock followers will know - it's the one with an unlikely (& young!) John Gielgud, Peter Lorre and Madeleine Carrol as WW1 spies and who get a conscience, but the Master of Suspense turns it all into a decent thriller. However, the quality of transfer is poor - grainy, flickering, with clogged shadows and quite soft overall.

The other three are rarities, unknown to the majority, even Hitchcockians might not be familiar with all of them - and for fair reason. Either they're Silent and frankly, boring (The Farmer's Wife, 1928), on closed sets, supposedly in Civil War Ireland and failing to convey any sense of the dramatic (Juno and the Paycock, 1930). Lastly, Rich & Strange (1932), at last gets Hitch expanding his repertoire and locations, but it's clear he is still forming his craft, so it's a mixed bag.

It would be too easy to award five stars because it's Hitchcock and includes The Lady Vanishes. The Farmer's Wife and Juno & The Paycock get two stars each from me, whilst Rich & Strange, three. Secret Agent gets 4 and of course the highlight movie gets 5. I AM seeing the films as most Hitch devotees would and definitely keeping in mind that most would compare them with the classics that they know.

In particular the DVD of "The Lady Vanishes" is very poor and this is the major film in this collection - and the reason i bought the box set. The film appears blurred and overlit. I know this film can look A LOT better as I saw it a short while back on television.

The quality may not be perfect but these early Hitchcock films make up for it in character. Ranging from 1928 to 1938 this five DVD set includes several rarely seen works such as Rich And Strange and Juno And The Paycock essential for any Hitchcockian.

This s an excellent set of Hitchcock films covering both silent and 'talkie' .I am not a movie buff so I can not give production details or technical criticism but as an ordinaary viewer who is aware of Htchcock's genius I would always suggest that ths set is worth buying. I was pleased with the content and also with the delivery and sales concern of Centre Books.
