George Armstrong Custer was a legend in his own lifetime; being known then as 'The Boy General'. From Bull Run through Gettysburg to Gen. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse; he fought in most of the major Civil War battles, personally leading more than fifty cavalry charges from the front! At the age of twenty four, he was promoted Brigadier General commanding the Michigan Cavalry Brigade; largely due to his utter fearlessness in battle.
With the Confederacy defeated and gold discovered in the Black Hills; the Gov't in Washington again looked westward. Now commanding the 7'th Cavalry; Gen. Custer was ordered to clear the northern frontier of the native tribes. He began this task with ruthless efficiency and white European immigrants were soon moving into Wyoming, Nebraska and the Dakota's.
On 25'th June 1876, as he led an attack on a hostile encampment sited along the Little Big Horn River in Montana, Gen. Custer and some 270 troopers found themselves surrounded and outnumbered. In a furious two hour battle that shrouded the 7'th Cavalry with eternal glory, Crazy Horse and his Sioux/Cheyenne warriors massacred the entire command. Just fifteen minutes distant, and within sound of the gunfire; Major Reno's 400 strong support force 'failed to arrive'. Since his death, 'Custer's Last Stand' has been immortalised in countless books, films, comics, games, toys etc... of which this DVD is merely the latest, so remembering the choice the God's gave Achilles; perhaps 'Custer's Luck' stayed with him to the end. He's certainly the most well known of America's Civil War Generals today.
Part of The History of Warfare DVD series by Cromwell, this 50 minute programme brings to mind the Ladybird Books of my childhood; short, neatly presented programmes, packed with masses of information put forward in a clear, simple but entertaining style. Perfect for those wishing to learn the basics without spending too much time/money doing so.
Two other programmes which make ideal companion viewing are Errol Flynn's 1941 classic:- They Died With Their Boots On [1941]which tells Custer's legend in epic form and the 2007 BBC productions:- Wild West : Complete BBC Series 1 & 2 [DVD]. The first episode covers the Little Big Horn battle very well indeed. By blending the latest historical research with tribal memories, John Farren reveals a very different but far more logical train of events.
