The turn of the century. Alfred Polly - the humble dreamer, forever looking up at the stars. Sadly all has gone wrong - his tiny gents' outfitters failing, his wife increasingly frustrated by his lack of ambition. The only escape would seem suicide. Instead, there is a dramatic turn of events....
Lee Evans is perfect as Polly, so heartfelt his cry: "I'm not most men. I'm ME." Unexpectedly appealing too is Anne-Marie Duff in what could have been the unsympathetic role of wife Miriam. Both are good people, but incompatible. (Polly: "See where the road takes us." Miriam: "What's the point of walking if you're not going anywhere?")
A 90 minute gem from ITV. No bonuses, alas. Just sit back and enjoy. Here are times lovingly recreated and a gentle, wistful hero discovering dreams CAN come true.
Warmly recommended.
