4.0 out of 5 stars Adventure in Ancient Rome 26 Aug 2012
Format:Hardcover
Jake and the History Keepers are back in this thrilling new instalment by British author Damian Dibben. This time they are travelling back to AD27 and Ancient Rome to try and rescue Topaz.

What is so great about this series is the actual premise of being able to travel back to any period in time. The characters get to visit some amazing locations, enriched by fantastic details of all the historical events which actually took place. The scenes in the book really come alive with such wonderfully descriptive writing and all of these things mean that the scope for the series is pretty much infinite. There are so many exciting places and adventures which could lie in store for the History Keepers.

I really enjoyed the first in the series when I read it last year but I loved `Circus Maximus' even more. The basic idea behind the secret organisation has already been explained and put in place, so Dibben can now simply concentrate on weaving a fabulous story with plenty of action for Jake and co as they attempt to save the world.

The characters grew on me even more too this time around. Jake is a brilliant hero (move over Percy Jackson!) but I also adore Nathan who is by Jake's side throughout and my personal favourite. He's funny and charming, obsessed with fashion but also loyal and brave and the right person to have by your side in times of need.

The History Keepers have to face Agata Zeldt and she makes a great baddie - the character that you love to hate. Every hero needs an enemy and Zeldt is it! Every time she appeared I wanted to run and hide because she's just so scary.

The ending nicely plants the seeds for the next book in the series which promises to lead the group on yet another dangerous mission. A sublime combination of fantasy and adventure, hold onto your seats as Dibben takes you on a rollercoaster ride through history, fraught with danger and excitement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hooked from the beginning... 6 Aug 2012
By K T
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
The first book in this series 'The Storm Begins' was definitely one of my highlights of 2011 (when it was first released in hardback). I was expecting therefore something similar from 'Circus Maximus'. What I read though was even better. What an adventure story. It grips you from page one and doesn't let you go until you reach the final pages. What's more it leaves you wanting for more as a taster of the third book is introduced.

For any reader that maybe was not won over by the first book, I would thoroughly recommend revisiting the series with this second book. The time the author took in the first book to introduce each of the characters and set the scene was well worth it as you jump straight into the adventure. The characters grow throughout the second book and you can't help but warm to a personal favourite (or at times be frustrated by them) - including those that took more of a background role in the first book... step forward Rose!

The series works for several reasons, but a few of these means it stands apart from several of those books it sits alongside on the bookstore shelf. The vivid images that Damian Dibben creates in the writing takes the reader right into the heart of Circus Maximus - it comes alive. Having been to Mont St Michel I love the scenes set here. It would work especially well in schools as you learn as you read and it leaves you hungry to discover more about Ancient Rome.

I would thoroughly recommend to anyone, but especially those with children aged between 8-13. Well worth buying in advance of a long journey as they will be hooked.

4.0 out of 5 stars Immensely enjoyable read! 3 Nov 2012
Format:Hardcover
The History Keepers: Circus Maximus is a thrilling, captivating read that I enjoyed immensely and would easily recommend to others. It was full of gripping adventure, it is fun to read, it is full of suspense, and it even has some really emotional scenes thrown in for good measure. With all of these happening, it is easy to see why this book is such an incredible read. It holds some really strong, powerful and entertaining characters that really bring the story alive. It is even enjoyable for young readers and adults as Damian has managed to make sure that there is something for everything. I said it in my review of his first book, but this series has all the interesting and compelling attributes that the Harry Potter series did so if you're still searching for a good new series to read - this is the one! Besides, this book also has an exciting, cliff-hanger-esque ending that has opened up the story and made me really excited for the next book.

** I recieved this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review **

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting time travel adventure in Ancient Rome 4 Jan 2013
Format:Hardcover
When I posted by review of The Storm Begins, the first book in Damian Dibben's action time-travel series, I had no option but to mention a certain other popular series for young people in this genre. I am a huge TimeRiders fan, but back in that review I confidently proclaimed that based on the fun I had reading The Storm Begins there was definitely room for another time-travel adventure featuring teen protagonists. The sequel, Circus Maximus, has only confirmed these initial feelings.

The Storm Begins was typical of many first-in-series books in that a certain portion of the story had to be given over to introducing the main characters, and the nature of the History Keepers group. With this already done, Damian Dibben is able to hit the ground running with Circus Maximus, with the first of the book's many action scenes starting in pretty much the very first chapter. From the conclusion of this scene onwards the pace of the plot is superfast, and is just the kind of story that could suck in even the most reluctant of readers.

One of my (very slight) criticisms of the first book was that despite being great fun to read the characters seemed a little two-dimensional. With this second book Dibben spends more time adding flesh to the likes of Jake Djones, Nathan Wylder and Charlie Chieverley, whilst also bringing some of his secondary characters out of the background and into the action. In addition, he also introduces a brand new villain - if you thought Prince Zeldt was nasty just wait until you 'meet' Agata Zeldt, "the most evil woman in history". Damian Dibben does OTT villains very well, and they really are the people you love to hate.
