Book Description

20 Oct 2011 Historical Atlas
This atlas covers the history of the British Isles from earliest times to the present day. The first hunter-gatherers, who crossed into what would become our familiar islands by the 'landbridge', and later followed by more familiar peoples - the Celts, Angles, Saxons, Vikings and Normans, who together would create our islands' unique history. Each contributed ideas which shaped our lands, languages and thoughts that are at the core of our identities to this day. This story is illustrated with 150 full-colour maps and plans that range across many topics, such as agricultural, political and industrial revolutions. This book shows the expansion of our islands' peoples across the oceans and the lasting legacy that movement left on the world and on our home islands. We show the fluctuating fortunes of the states we now identify ourselves by, from an Anglo-Scottish imperium to devolved power, independence and the often painful process by which the modern map of our islands evolved. The forces of history and religion divided the islands' peoples but our DNA unites us much more than most would realise - the islands have gone on to embrace new cultures that have come to seek refuge, opportunity and equalitry - this is a peoples' history. The Historical Atlas of the British Isles is a completely unique insight into the history, formation and expansion of the British Isles, from the first settlers in 9000 BC, the Viking Invasions and the Battle of Hastings to the Wars of the Roses, the Great Fire of London and the First and Second World Wars. With a wealth of specially commissioned colour maps illustrating each iconic period of history, this book is a must for all historical enthusiasts.

Love atlases and love history, but the maps are impossible to view on the kindle as they are so low resolution it is impossible to read labels, place names, legends etc. A horrible mess.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless Maps -should be withdrawn from sale 28 Nov 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Just as all the others have said, the maps do not scale so are just blobs of colour.

I should have read the negative reviews before buying.

Luckily, being Kindle, I was able to return for a full refund immediately

This book should be withdrawn from sale. Pen & Sword are debasing their brand with this

2.0 out of 5 stars Maps can't be read on Kindle 1 July 2013
By Malcolm
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm sure the text is fine, if I had got that far to read it. When I buy an atlas I want maps that I can use. Unfortunately, in this case, the maps are too small on the Kindle and are too blurry to read if you double-tap to enlarge them. Sorry.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing book 20 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I LIKE MAPS AND TO HAVE THEM LAY OUT HISTORY SOUNDED GREAT. BUT THE MAPS ARE UNREADABLE AS THEY ARE SO SMALL AND THEY DO NOT EXPAND. other than that IT gives lists that are handy BUT the prime ministers list is so small it fits 200 years on a postage stamp so it is UNREADABLE. It only cost 99p but there are better books.

Maps are far too small to be able to read. Rubbish buy. Why should I HAVE to write a prescribed number of words?

Sadly the words and map keys are illegible on the screen, so this book just isn't suitable for Kindle.

1.0 out of 5 stars Most disappointing!
The whole point of an atlas is that it is a book of maps. There are maps in this atlas but the resolution is so low they are totally unreadable. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Shame about the maps and diagrams.
An excellent historical timeline but the maps and diagrams are so poor they cannot be viewed properly, what a waste of effort. An atlas is supposed to be about maps! Read more
