Given I recently moved to live in the middle of the area covered by this book and am fairly dry and academic, this book could, or in theory should have been written for me. But, like so many glances into the past, it is written from archiveal material and is largely droll. Much of it is taken up with what I would describe as filler material; ie pages and pages relating to the religious beliefs of the various authors it attempts to describe. I read the first half then put it down - probably never to pick it up again? It was also expensive. I cannot recommend it. Sorry. 5/10
