This book has completely changed our family life. Within days of starting to read it, the huge tantrums my son had been throwing for the whole of his 7 years ceased. I have read countless parenting books and spoken to Drs and psychologists but nothing helped until I read this and realised what was going on for him... it is such an eye opener to see what life is like for a highly sensitive child, as a highly sensitive person I understood my child to a degree but life for a highly sensitive child is not the same as life for a highly sensitive adult. I wish with all my heart I had have read this sooner

This is a very good book for those of us with highly sensitive children. It deals quite well with the group of children,who are highly sensitive, but also have a lot of get up and go, and who may miss out on being treated as sensitive kids. My son and I are both in this category and this book has helped me understand him better with improved relationship as a result.

It was obvious the moment I opened the book that Elaine Aron was describing my child: "Highly sensitive individuals are those born with a tendency to notice more in their environment and deeply reflect on everything before acting". She goes on to say that, "Sensitive people tend to be empathic, smart, intuitive, creative, careful and conscientious." But such acute awareness (of everything from food textures, to noise and social situations, etc) often leads to overstimulation. Sensitive people therefore have a tendency to sit on the sidelines of life in order to observe rather than participate. Similarly, risk aversion can prevent them from taking up many of the opportunities and chances that come their way.
I had often admired my daughter's sensitivity and conscientiousness, but compared to the hurly burly of the confident pre-school children around her, I worried that she was being left behind by life. I began to wonder if there was anything I could do to keep her confidence high and to encourage her to join in, in a way which would suit her and respect her character. The book has so much good advice to give. It talks specifically about each age group from babies to teenagers leaving home, and deals with many common problems, such as potty training, feeding difficulties, first day at school, children's parties, anxiety over friendships, engaging in sports, coping with new situations.
My daughter is nearly 4 yrs old and, being a highly sensitive person myself, I had already developed many of the strategies suggested in the book. My only wish is that I had read the book sooner, so that I could have avoided some of the inevitable trial and error and discomfort felt by both myself and my child along the way. I feel somewhat guilty now, having recognised where things went wrong, but am strengthened by the fact that we are less likely to make mistakes in the future. I know and respect my daughter a lot better now and within a few days of reading the book our (already very happy) relationship improved visibly and I felt my daughter relax in new ways. I cant recommend this book enough.
