I bought this book on a whim without thumbing through it much, if at all. Then I read it, and am very pleased. Subject matter ranges from pre-history to "modern times" and The Gaelic is not ignored. Indeed, chapter 8, "Lochaber no More" begins with the words, in Gaelic and English, of that composition and the first paragraph contains one of the most emotional lines I have ever read, uttered by a man, Domhnall Ban Crosd, who returned to Carnish (Isle of Lewis) from Canada years after being cleared off the land. He looked around the deserted village, wept, and said "Chaneil nith an seo man a bha e, ach an ataireachd na mara." That is, "there is nothing here now as it was, except for the surge of the sea." Complementing the text are very nice illustrations in color, and black and white. Keep in mind this book is about the HIGHLAND clans, not the Border/Lowland families. Still, I do not believe you will be disappointed.
