Patrick Hawes has expanded his original single movement work on Highgrove, wriiten two years earlier, to celebrate Prince Charles' 60th. Birthday, into a four movement suite comprising: The Goddess of the Woods, The Wildflower Meadow, The Sanctuary and The Gladiator. This suite, of almost thirty minutes' duration, is wonderfully evocative of the seasonal changes in the gardens at Highgrove. Not since Respighi has a composer been able to capture colour and light in musical sound as effectively as Patrick Hawes. Claire Jones is superb throughout, the harp bubbles like a well-behaved water-feature to imaginative accompaniment of the Philharmonia's strings. The strings come into their own in the Gladiator, where cellos and bases give the Gladiator a sense of power and movement.
What of the other thirty-five minutes of music on this CD? Rest assured it is of an equally high quality. The Sonata No.1, for harp, written by the blind Welsh harpist John Parry, 1710-1782, is a ten minute Baroque gem, where the harp has the intimacy of a music box, playing in your living room.
The Santa Fe Suite, written by William Mathias (1934-1992), for harp, evokes the landscapes and spirits of New Mexico and, after two rather pastoral movements, it explodes in a lively "sun dance" finale full of energetic Latin rhythms.
The High Grove Suite is separated from the Sonata and Santa Fe suite by Hubert Parry's Lady Radnor Suite. This piece, written for string orchestra in 1902, for his close friend, Helen - Countess of Radnor, is in six movements: a Prelude and five other Baroque Dance movements: Allemande, Sarabande, Bourree, Slow Minuet and Gigue. The Sarabande is particularly pleasing and the Slow Minuet offers contrast in tempo.
Claire Jones is on top form throughout and Hawes brings out the very best in the Philharmonia's strings. Sixty-four minutes that showcase some of the best of British music.
The CD sleeve-notes include some good colour photographs that, for those who have not visited the gardens at Highgrove, will help set the Highgrove Suite in context.
Very highly recommended for those who like the finest British music and harp music in particular.
