Product Description

Review

This book is usually given out for free ... ... on the streets and airports by the famous saffron robed Krishna Consciousness devotees. It was also my first proper introduction to vegetarianism when I was living as an impoverished student in ... more » Townsville back in 1993, and meat was very expensive up there. "The Higher Taste" brings a whole new dimension to vegetarian foods - there's far more to being vegetarian than eating salads and tofu as popular culture mistakenly believes. There are recipes for Italian dishes, French food, Chinese, and Indian. Added to that there are many quotes from famous vegetarians throughout history as to why they became that way, as well as both Indian and Christian philosophies behind the reasons why one ought to go vegetarian. Though I do admit that my practice of it has been patchy for the last 15 years, I do recognise its virtues. --Reader Review

This book is not actually authored by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami (the founder of the Hare Krishna movement in the West) but by some of his followers (the introductary essay on vegetarianism is based on his teachings).

It is, however, a very nice little cookbook. It has recipes from different parts of the world (India, Italy, China, Mexico ...) which are grouped into complete menus. The dishes are simple to prepare and are very nice. The book also contains much interesting information on vegetarianism. It was the cookbook I used when I first started to cook vegetarian and I derived much inspiration from it.

I am not a fan of recipe books and I am even LESS of a fan of celebrity cook books and I will only buy that that I think are worthy of purchasing and this is one of those books.

I will also add I am not a member of the Hare Krishna sect though I have great deal of respect for them, so this review is done based SOLELY on the content of the book itself.

I really like the arguments that are put forward in the beginning of the books as to WHY we should not eat meat, I still eat meat but I am going to try and cut down on it and then cut it out completely, not easy for someone who has "Carnivore" stamped on her butt. The book also points out that there are famous vegetarians such as Leonado de Vinci and Benjamin Franklin to name but two and that by going vegetarian doesn't mean you give up your lifestyle, you just improve on it, health wise and finance wise!

The recipes are great and really simple,it tells you how to make Ghee, and curd, something I wouldn't have dreamed of doing until I got this book and then it gives some very tasty and filling recipes such as green beans and tomato (yum!)Bengali Kheer (rice pud...Hmmmmmm!) mixed vegetable curry, (I'm dribbling here!) and many, many more recipes that will keep you busy and well filled for the whole year through.

This is very much an under rated book, people probably shy away from it because it is linked to the Hare Krishna religion, well all I can say to that is, you are missing out on a good thing, and I have no qualms about buying it for all my friends who come from all faiths, creeds and religious backgrounds.

The recipes in this book make sense once you make them and they are so adaptable a little tweaking can make them fit into any diet regigm also. Also put forward is a holistic methodology for preparing the food addressing the mind body connection in a special way. We are what we eat and this book also explains why that is and how we can gain benefits of vegetarianism from this angle. The recipes are from all over the world and the book provides whole menu plans which are full of dishes that compliment each other, perfect for that dinner party. Vegetarians will be in awe of your culinary skills once you cook them these recipes. Bon apetite!
