Product Description

Once Upon A Time...

When their beloved grandmother dies, siblings Sebastian and Elise find themselves suddenly alone. Fearing foster care and separation, the children seek refuge in their isolated woodland home, hoping the outside world will pass them by.

But the outside world is the least of their concerns. Nana May's body still sits out in the garden, in the grasp of a summer heatwave. A malevolent figure stalks through the trees, waiting for nightfall. The household chores have yet to be done.

And what of the mystery surrounding the siblings' abusive mother, who vanished without trace four years earlier?

In a place where secrets hang from every branch, Sebastian and Elise will discover that real life is no fairy tale.

'Grimmer than Grimm and wittier than Wilde. A strange and fascinating tale.' Peter J Merrigan (author of Rider and The Camel Trail)

More About the Author

Malcolm Richards was raised in Penzance, Cornwall but when seasickness scuppered his childhood dream of becoming a pirate, he moved to London in 1997.

After graduating from the Writing degree programme at Middlesex Univeristy, he went on to work with young people with severe emotional and behavioural difficulties.

His debut novel, The Hiding House, is a darkly woven fairy tale for adults.

Malcolm lives in East London, teaches creative writing classes to children and is currently working on his next novel.

Malcolm Richards was a new author to me....now looking for more of his books to download. It was fantastic, a well told story from a childs perspective on life. The last 6 chapters were complete page turners, I was desperate to find out what the outcome was going to be. Would recommend to a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a fantastic page turner 17 Mar 2012
By Lulu
Format:Kindle Edition
I started to read The Hiding House just before going to sleep one night, thinking that I'd just read a couple of pages but had trouble putting it down. The characters are so well developed and I felt I was in the house with them, watching their every move. I didn't want to leave them until I knew what happened to them which resulted in me staying up until 2am to finish the book! It was completely worth me looking tired and puffy eyed this morning and I can't wait to read more from this author, please tell me I won't have to wait too long. I bought a printed copy of the book as I don't have a Kindle, not sure when it's available on Amazon but I bought it from lulu.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing with a capital A! 30 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The title of my review says it all. This story is beautifully written, heartwarming and tender, yet savagely dark and creepy at the same time. The twisting plot makes it impossible to put down, and excitingly difficult to decipher between fantasy and reality. Add to that an ending that is so unexpected even the most imaginative will find it hard to predict, and the result is a unique tale that has me wondering with anticipation about what is next to come from Richards. A fantastic read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great things to come from new author 12 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The thing I found most striking about this book was the level of description the author writes with. I felt I could almost smell Nanna Mays gingerbread Baking. The characterisation of the children is particularly strong, Richards has captured the essence of childrens imaginations well. I believe this authour has great things in store and I will certainly be looking out for his future work.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING! 21 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This sort of book isn't normally my thing but I'm SO glad I've read it. Elise and Sebastian seem real, their emotions described so perfect you could be sat right there watching it happen! They haven't had the best start in life with their Mother being an alcoholic and struggling to cope with 2 children and the memory of something horrific that happened in her past. Nana May seemed like an amazing lady and she would do anything for the ones she loves. I don't want to give anything away as there are a few fantastic surprises!

I loved this book and would recommend it - even if you don't normally read these books! MY FIRST 5 STAR!

5.0 out of 5 stars loved it 29 Feb 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This isnt my normal style of book but being new to Kindle I seem to be buying and downloading everything. From the first page i was hooked. The characters are real and beleivable. The kids are so naive. Couldnt guess where the story was going which made it more enjoyable. disappointed when i got to the end. All in all an enjoyable read without the complications of law or policing which is my usual preference.

5.0 out of 5 stars fairytale for adults 9 April 2012
By Debz
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I didn't know what to make of this book at first as it was so different from anything else I'd read but after a couple of chapters I was hooked. It was so original, well written and intriguing, I really didn't know where the story was going and couldn't predict the ending, which made such a refreshing change. I will certainly be looking out for more books from this author and have saved this one in my favourite collections on my Kindle as I will definitely read it again.
