Product Description

Synopsis

Clint, Nigel and Wayne are three middle aged friends with a secret. They are master magicians, Hidden Masters in fact. However, they are not Hidden Tibetan Masters for they are The Three Hidden Masters, two from Hemel Hempstead and one from Bricket Wood. They discover a conspiracy to build casinos in Blackpool, thus making it the Las Vegas of the north, turning the resort into a seedy tacky and depraved town. Something needs to be done. Unable to turn down a challenge they head north at the weekend to put an end to the plot. However, they need to save the universe by Sunday evening because they have to be back at work on Monday morning. This is occult fiction where magick and supernatural events occur in the modern world, but this book is not for kids; this is magickal fiction strictly for adults. What you will find is tarot, astrology and grown men in robes, performing rituals, and generally behaving strangely. All this is wrapped up in Jack Barrow's off-beat wit and quirky perspective on the counter culture of modern occult paganism, pop philosophy, cheap dark rum and drugs.

Book worm isn't something you could relate to me as I probably only get through around 4-6 books a year. Fortunately this was delight to read & I enthusiastically got through the book within a couple of days. I've recommended it to friends who like me are not huge book fans as it's such an easy read.

I'm not very clued up on the magic scene but `Barrow' managed to educate & humour even me a PS2 addict. I do hope another book is on the cards (no magic joke intended) as I could quiet easily see a trilogy with these every day characters within which Barrow has managed to make believe are real & more importantly want to meet for a smoke & a drink or two of dark rum.

This is a fine read - pacey, lots of nicely observed set pieces, funny, fast and well worth the wait. Jack Barrow's debut novel is a must for those of us who ever sat out under the stars around a bonfire,in the company of good friends, talking complete rubbish , while trying to change the world by the power of our overly addled minds.

Too old for Potter? Try Jack.

Hidden Gem 22 Jun 2006
Format:Paperback
What a likeable bunch of heroes, no Harvard lecturers, nor musclebound CIA hunks here. Rather more three ordinary blokes you could meet in a local pub. Not any old pub mind, more the one with a few old bikes outside, perhaps a busy pool table and a mix of patrons young and old who seem little bothered about the pace of the modern world.

One can't help but be drawn into Barrow's world of tight friendships, it's like a buddy movie on dope. The rich characterisation makes us feel that we are tagging along with the protagonists on their bizarre journey.

Wonderful descriptions of modern day occultism, comfortable dialogue, smart quips and observations combine to make it an informative and chucklesome read.

The action never lets up throughout the book, sometimes at a relaxed pace, and sometimes in bursts of frenetic activity. The farcical denouement is joyously well constructed, and I found myself reading faster and faster as I was swept along by it.

I hope this is not the last we will see of this promising novelist.
