All the tenderness you would like to read to your child - you'll find it here. It tells you about paying attention, perseverance, patience, caring... Most of all, it tells you about love without ever mentioning it straightforwardly, giving full scope to feelings and imagination. My 3-year-old son loved it so much he didn't part with it for a long long time and I remember reading it on my own time and again just for pleasure. I'm a great fan of Martin Waddell's books because they always gave way to long chats with my young son. He liked "Cant't you sleep little bear" for his own fear of the dark and "The tough princess" for it's humour" but his favourites were "The Toymaker" and "The hidden house" for the feelings of tenderness and generosity.
Mention is also due to Angela Barrett, as the whole is beautifully rendered by illustrations one would like to frame.

There is a wonderful poignancy to this book, beautifully written and enhanced by the captivating pictures.
It's full of intimations of powerful feelings, just right for children to begin to discover their own, and deep enough for grown-ups to feel some the pain of things having to grow old - like, for instance, where did Bruno mysteriously go and never come back from?
I cannot recommend this book more highly, it is always a joy to read to the children, and they never tire of hearing it.

I looked so long for this book and was so delighted to find it again.
The illustrations are subtly coloured and so detailed. It's such a beuatiful, magical book with an old fashioned feel. I would definitely recommend it.
