Product Description

Although she is the daughter of Damar's king, Aerin has never been accepted as full royalty. Both in and out of the royal court, people whisper the story of her mother, the witchwoman, who was said to have enspelled the king into marrying her to get an heir to rule Damar-then died of despair when she found she had borne a daughter instead of a son. But none of them, not even Aerin herself, can predict her future-for she is to be the true hero who will wield the power of the Blue Sword...

"Vibrant, witty, compelling, the story is the stuff of which true dreams are made."-The Horn Book

"Splendid high fantasy... filled with tender moments, good characters, satisfying action and sparkling dialogue... superb!"-School Library Journal, starred review

I love this book! 26 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The Hero & The Crown was my introduction to McKinley, and what an introduction. Although I have loved every book of hers I have read (and own most of them) Aerin will always hold a special place in my heart.

Anyone who has ever felt out of place in their surroundings, who has ever felt awkward or unloved, will relate to the gawky cuckoo with the wry sense of humour that is Aerin. She commits heroic deeds with no equipment and in the most unheroic and heedless fashion, plunging headlong into things she is convinced she will fail, and endears herself to the reader along the way.

Not many writers are able to write such a flawed and human character amid such a tapestry and make her so unforgettable. If you never read another McKinley novel, READ THIS ONE and you will be equally hooked!

'The Hero and the Crown', was the second book of Robin McKinley's that I chose to read, ('The Blue Sword' being the first). This book brought the reader into the world of Aerin, who was mentioned in 'The Blue Sword'. R McKinley once again wrote about a young woman who was special in her own way; not because she was beautiful, or popular, but because she had the determination to take what she had been given, and prove she was just as good as anyone else. Maur and Agsded,'the baddies', were described in such a way that you could see the beauty in them, despite the fact that they were both born out of pure evil, and Luthe, he was brought to life in a manner that was lacking in 'The Blue Sword'. When oh when are you going to write another book about Damar, Robin?

Cool 6 Dec 2000

The book was really cool. It took a while to get going, but once I started reading it it grabbed me and pulled me in. The story is long and involved, and the plot is excellent. The language is a little old-fashioned, but that just adds to the atmosphere of the story.

There are little bits in "The Hero and the Crown" that refer to other stories that Miss McKinley has written that you wouldn't understand unless you'd read the other stories, including those in different anthologies. An example is "The Healer".

I really liked this book, and I'm willing to bet anyone else who reads it will as well.
