Product Description

Product Description

The Past has become a national obsession, spawning innumerable heritage organisations and occupying hours of TV time. How and when did this passion for the past become a collective fixation? Ben Cowell traces the rise of heritage consciousness over the last 300 years from its origins in the writings of the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century antiquarians to the founding of the first heritage organizations in the nineteenth century and on to the present day. This is a unique and important book, with a wide appeal -- from general readers, through students on heritage management courses, to members of conservationist bodies and policy-makers at all levels.

About the Author

BEN COWELL was awarded a starred first in history from the University of East Anglia and then received his PhD in history from the University of Nottingham. He has recently moved from a job as Head of Social and Economic Research at English Heritage to work for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

This is a fantastic book which covers in detail a huge swathe of heritage issues while always retaining an open mind and a flexibly nimble approach to its complex subject. Cowell's book is painstakingly researched, diligently balanced, and delicately, quietly polemic. This is historiography as it should be written: clear in purpose, clear in expression and clearly an excellent resource for both those new to the subject and those well-versed in the broad materials re-presented. Highly recommended.
