Book Description

15 Mar 1998
An authoritative memoir of the legendary rock guitarist by his friend and collaborator Mitch Mitchell, drummer with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. 'The Hendrix Experience' recounts the entire history of this ground-breaking musician's rise to prominence, from the tiny clubs of London's Soho to the rock festivals at Monterey and Woodstock. The book includes a wealth of personal anecdotes about Jimi both on and off stage, and details of concert set lists and rare memorabilia. It contains over 200 illustrations, including previously unpublished photos taken by Mitchell himself. The publication will coincide with the 30th anniversary of Hendrix's death in September 1970.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect memory 1 Oct 2009
By gerryg VINE VOICE
Mitch Mitchell, not above a little arrogance, recalls life with the JHE with nothing but pleasure at having been part of it, and a clear enduring sense of profound loss.

It might not be the most profound read, but it is an interesting and endearing memoire of what it was like to be there. I enjoyed every word and still dip into it occasionally, years after I first read it.

I consider it a pity that Noel Redding was unable to look back so unequivocally.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best book on Jimi Hendrix by a long way. 31 Dec 2013
I enjoyed this book when originally released in 1990, but then I was only 18 years old back then! I have just re-read it and it has left me very disappointed. The biggest plus with this book are the photographs. There are lots of beautiful pictures which I've not seen in any other books. The pictures are often given the wrong place or year, but a good picture is a good picture I suppose.

Mitch Mitchell comes across well in his book, but he doesn't seem to be able to recall many details of his time with Jimi at all. He often says, 'I can't remember' or 'I'm not sure', which is annoying to the reader. Each year is only given a few pages and I felt thoroughly short changed by the end, and was left thinking, 'is that it?' There are a few nice anecdotes, but nowhere near enough. His memories of the night before Jimi died are quite interesting, but again breezed over far too quickly.

The book will be of interest to the serious Jimi Hendrix fan, if only to read the once, but I would certainly look elsewhere for a more comprehensive read on Jimi, although I am not sure where, as a definitive book on Jimi Hendrix has yet to be written in my opinion.

Great story from Mitch Mitchell's perspective. Great photos. A must for any Hendrix enthusiast. What the man behind one of the most innovative Rock guitarists in the history of the guitar saw.
