Joe Haldeman confesses to being fascinated by Ernest Hemingway. So does his protagonist in the story, in fact the hero is a Professor of Literature specialising in Hemingway, and has a trick memory. But I will not give away the intriguing twist in the plot, the sting in the tail, you need to read the book.
This is nothing like Haldeman's other books, such as the Forever War series, and at first I was wondering what the 'What If?' was in the story for it to be SF. But I was not disappointed, and Haldeman neatly twists present day reality while still convincing you it is credible.
I did some checking after I finished the book for the second time, and found that much of what Haldeman said about Hemingway was correct, so I learnt something as well. Thank you Joe.
I only gave it four stars because I thought the end was rushed and confused, another few pages could have made all the difference between a good book and a great book.
