While I do appreciate the fact that the book is only about heirloom tomatoes, it doesn't really talk about everything there is to know about tomatoes. The fact that the author is not a horticulturist is very obvious, she is what I would describe as a very serious gardener.
I have a few beefs with this book:
1) Shmutz! You're Jewish, we get it!!! No need to rub it in our faces! Are we going to need a Hebrew to English dictionary!? Why would you want to use words like shmutz in a book about heirloom tomatoes.
2) It is very obvious that the Author and Photographer know each other well and each writes a few pages plugging the other... I didn't buy this book to read the both of you pay each other compliments on my time. I will admit that the photographs in the book are very pleasing to look at, but I still believe that those few pages were unnecessary.
3) Once the book begins to catalogue the different types of heirloom tomatoes, it begins to lose its educational value and becomes more of a reference book. I only see myself referring to it whenever I am curious about a certain type f heirloom tomato.
The one thing I found very valuable, is the couple of pages on how to save tomato seeds, especially the fermentation method. I had already read an article on the internet which described the same method and found it reassuring to have the information confirmed, but that holds true to almost all tomato seeds and not just heirloom. This is what I am talking about when I say that the book could have a lot more on growing and caring for tomato plants... When compared with
The Complete Chile Pepper Book: A Gardener's Guide to Choosing, Growing, Preserving, and Cooking you will see what I am talking about... it discusses the history, species, diseases, caring, different growing methods and much more... all this is lacking in this book. You would expect a lot more from a massive book like this one purely dedicated towards heirloom tomatoes.
I am sure that there are better tomato books out there... this is only for those who are looking for a very specialized book on cataloging the different types of heirloom tomatoes.
