Product Description

Amazon Review

A stranger in a strange land, Highlander Duncan MacTavish finds himself summoned to the bedside of his dying grandfather, Lord Neville Thackeray, whom he has never met. This is only the first in a series of unwelcome surprises for the brawny Scot, who was perfectly content to take over as laird of the clan MacTavish. Saddled with a fiancé he doesn't like, Ophelia, whose beauty is surpassed only by her waspish nature; far from the home and life he loves; and being pressured by the autocratic Marquis of Birmingdale to toe the line of English respectability, Duncan meets the Honorable Sabrina Lambert and finds her a breath of fresh air in the stifling atmosphere of the English house party.

Unfortunately, scandalous rumours taint Sabrina's family name, practically ensuring that she will never be able to secure an advantageous match. Duncan's only friend to help him endure the machinations of Ophelia and a seemingly endless parade of other eligible young women, Sabrina is adept at making him laugh. After all, she spent most of her life diffusing the tension between her battling maiden aunts, who reared her after her parents' tragic deaths. But Duncan slowly begins to realize that his feelings for Sabrina are more than "friendly". Duncan and Sabrina's complicated courtship is classic Lindsey! Fans of the author who wait with bated breath for each new offering won't be disappointed with The Heir. --Alison Trinkle --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

Has anyone in London ever taken part in the coming-out season with less enthusiasm than Sabrina? She is young, lovely and possesses a sparkling wit - but she is a simple country girl, whose grandfather just happens to have been a nobleman. Luckily Ophelia, the daughter of a family friend, has been chosen to usher Sabrina through the pitfalls and perils of this all-important first season - and what better guide than this sophisticated blonde beauty who is the most sought-after beauty in the city?

Even less keen to be in London is Duncan McTavish. Having lived all of his twenty-one years in the Scottish Highlands, he has recently learned that he is the sole heir to an English Marquess and is now required to assume his grandfather's titles and estates. Worse still, a betrothal has already been arranged, without his consent, to the ravishing, viper-tongued Ophelia. But then the dashing highlander meets the enchanting Sabrina, a woman for whom Duncan would willingly abandon his beloved Scotland - a kindred spirit whose wit delights him, and whose essence is the exquisite stuff of dreams. But a secret dwells in her past which threatens their romance, and Duncan is in any case promised to another. A match that should be, a passion that must be, looks impossible - unless true love can somehow, miraculously, find a way... --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining 18 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Well, I wasn't a bit excited about buying another of Johanna Lindsey books. I've read Home for the Holidays and confess that was one of the worst books I've read in my life, and I've read quite a few. I didn't feel like getting it but than, on the bookstore there was hardy one with an interesting story, at least different within the normal. I read it fast and though Duncan was a bit naive, I liked his stuborness. It was not brilliant, but the book was certainly enjoyable. I liked it.

1.0 out of 5 stars boring, boring, boring 5 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I bought this in desperation and wished I hadn't bothered. I couldn't get interested in the hero and heroine, there was nothing to them. Frankly, I preferred Ophelia, the spoiled society girl, at least she had a bit of character! JL can do a lot better than this

1.0 out of 5 stars ONE TO MISS 16 Jan 2002
Format:Paperback
This is the first JL novel I have read, and it does not encourage me to read more. I found it to be insubstantial, hard to read and I could not wait to get to the end; it was such a hard read. None of the characters made me care about them and the 'Scottish" dialogue was very diffucult to read - not a relaxing book. In fact, I got to the end and did not really care what happened to anyone....

This book was pleasant enough if you were stuck for something to read. It however lacks any of the fire, passion and humour of JL's earlier work. Read more
