At first glance you would think this book would be a little gem but sadly it isn't. For a start considering you are using wild fruits, herbs etc., it would have been nice to have seen some pictures so you would know exactly what to pick and what not to pick. The section on mushrooms and fungi in particular I thought was inexecusably bad.......there is a paragraph about Field Mushrooms and how easy they are to distinguish from any other mushroom. This is inaccurate and dangerous information as there is another mushroom called a Yellow Stainer which looks exactly the same but if eaten will give you a really bad stomach ache. In actual fact it is easy to identify because you only have to rub it slighly and it stains yellow.

Fortunately I am a country girl and know what you can and can't eat but I would not recommend this book for the novice. I would recommend a book with photographs in it or good line drawings.

there were no ways of recognising/ identifiying the plants listed so the book is very disappointing. even sketches would do. all in all a very disappointing book

If I'd never been a hedgerow forager before and was thinking of taking it up this would be a useful book. It was handy for reminding me about some plants, but its lack of anything substantial was a bit of a let down. (You can't live on leafy salads, blackberry jam and sloe gin forever!)

My husband and I both enjoy the outdoor life and enjoy foraging for foods. This is an absolutely brilliant book, that guides you through all the free foods you can find, where its best to find them and what times of year it is best to find them. A great book for beginners in the foraging world or for people who have been foraging for years.
