Product Description

British crime thriller starring Gary Stretch as Mitchell 'Boots' Mason, a down-on-his-luck ex-con who is given a once-in-a-lifetime chance simultaneously to revenge himself upon his estranged parents (Christopher Lee and Jean Marsh) and pay off an outstanding debt to his shady crime boss Anawalt (Stephen Rea). How? By assassinating his own brother, Christian (Adrian Paul) - who just happens to be a high profile politician and potential Prime Ministerial candidate. However, Boots's plan starts to fall apart when he becomes involved with Claire (Shannyn Sossamon), the student whose flat he is using to carry out the crime, and finds corrupt cop Detective Dunn (Vinnie Jones) hot on his trail.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cain and Abel 24 Jun 2011
By Charles Vasey TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
This is a difficult film to categorise so I will abandon the attempt. Gary Stretch plays the eponymous heavy, an ex-con employed by the horrible Stephen Rea playing a cultured gangster with gusto. The cast includes a lot of talent from Christopher Lee through to Vinnie Jones playing a very nasty policeman indeed. There are plenty of twists and turns when it transpires the Heavy has a brother who is an up-and-coming politician. Keep careful notes here folks; they give you all the clues. Gary Stretch is not going to play the Hamlet in the near future - his background is boxing (he fought Chris Eubank) and modelling - but he plays the sort of role that Sylvester Stallone would take in the US. There's a fair amount of blood, lots of shooting, and a puzzle for you to work out. London is used to its best as a location, and whoever set up the interiors really did a good job, they looked like they were "dressed" for an estate agent's showing.

3.0 out of 5 stars A tale of two brothers 7 Nov 2011
By J. Morris TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
The Heavy is the story of Mitchell 'Boots' Mason (Gary Stretch - Alexander), a recently-paroled man who is known to be able to get things 'done'. He works for West-End businessman Anawalt (Stephen Rea - V for Vendetta) who feels that Boots owes him a debt for his release. Meanwhile, Boots' brother Christian Mason is running for Prime Minister and despite their acrimonious past wants to make amends with Boots, but for what reason? All the while, the hard-nosed & dubiously-moralled Detective Inspector Dunn (Vinnie Jones - Snatch) is out to make Boots' life a misery due to indiscretions between them from the past. Will Boots manage to shake off these remnants of his past and start afresh?

The Heavy is a London-based conspiracy movie, whilst it starts all gung-ho & brash it soon becomes a who's-after-who saga. It's well shot for the most-part with some really snappy direction following Boot's TVR around London to a soundtrack produced by Paul Oakenfold himself. There are some big names filling in the small roles (Christopher Lee - Star Wars - Prequel Trilogy/ The Lord of the Rings Trilogy plays the brother's father) and the beautiful Shannon Sossamon (A Knight's Tale) plays the love interest.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good film from the hit and mis Vinnie 10 April 2013

Ok, it's no Lock Stock, Snatch or Mean Machine. Secondly Vinnie is not even the lead, but I did buy this film as he is in it and after watching the trailer and seeing it cheap, it was worth the gamble.

I found it a little confusing at some points as my attention span dropped at various points throughout, mainly when that absolutely dire actor from the Highlander tv series was trying my patience with every second of screen time that he had been mistakenly given (I mean this guy is bad).

Overall it wasn't a bad film with an o.k. plot at the price I paid, far better value than "Blood Out" which I bought at the same time (that was tripe).

I would have given it 3 stars but I do like Mr. Jones so a 3.7 would be more accurate, kindly rounded up to a 4 for the charmless charismatic ol' Brit.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Genuine Surprise 4 Mar 2013
By Ragged Tiger TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this ages ago,and forgot all about it,deliberately I suspect,as the prospect of watching boyband refugee Lee Ryan attempting to act was one I was sure I would find painful. But when I did get round to watching it I got a real shock, because it turned out to be a really good film. The story revolves around two brothers,ex-con Gary Stretch and high flying politician Adrian Paul, their strained relationship, and the contract that appears to have been taken out on Stretch's characters life.I was surprised by the standard of acting as well, which is surprisingly high,Stephen Rea and Christopher Lee are always good, and the rest of the cast seem to have raised their games to match them.Gary Stretch has never been better, and even Vinnie Jones turns in a good performance. The direction is solid enough, the whole thing moves along at a constant pace, and there are some good action sequences as well, the result of which makes for gripping action/thriller.

There are a few problems, the matrix style, slow motion shoot out didn't work for me,and didn't fit within the film. Some of the editing is a little clunky as well, and there is a bit of a gaping hole in the plot, but Im not saying what as it could spoil things. But overall I thought it was a pretty good film and Im glad I bought it,and I will watch it again. As for Lee Ryan, hes not in it that much, and isnt required to do a lot.
