This book would be on my desert island non-fiction selection. It is a book to change your life.
It is partly the biography of a pioneering mainstream cardiologist, Dr Mimi Guarneri, who learned from her patients how emotions determine the health of our hearts, written so readably it swept me along like a good novel. Dr Guarneri began to question why someone who had had stents, for example, and had then done everything they should - not smoking, eating well, exercising - would return to her in a short time right back where they had been. From the medical model she was trained in, it did not make any sense. But she was one of those rare people who can step out of the mindset they are trained in and think outside their profession's usual box.
So she began to look at research into many different ways physical health and emotion are linked. She reports much of what she found in this readable and fascinating account. It is amazing to learn, for instance, just how much our emotional state and social support predict the outcome in coronary heart disease compared with physical factors like the degree to which our arteries are blocked. Amazing - and empowering.
I have been recommending this book by one of the pioneers of integrative medicine to my therapy students for years and have given a few copies as presents to non-therapists. I have always had good feedback from both groups.
