Product Description

Synopsis

Dr. Guarneri was trained to view the heart as an isolated organ that could be regulated, bypassed or transplanted through surgery. Her job was to wait for someone to have a heart attack and then try to save their life. Yet through her patients, she realised the heart is a much more complex organ than she had been taught - and that healing starts with human connection. In this engrossing book, Dr. Guarneri explores the new science that shows how the heart can be 'broken' as much by loneliness and depression as high cholesterol and elevated blood pressure, and that 'mending' can have more to do with healing a mind and soul than genetics and nutrition. The heart is the first organ to exhibit life and the last to die, Guarneri gives us invaluable information on how to look after it.

A life-changing read 11 May 2010
Format:Paperback
This book would be on my desert island non-fiction selection. It is a book to change your life.

It is partly the biography of a pioneering mainstream cardiologist, Dr Mimi Guarneri, who learned from her patients how emotions determine the health of our hearts, written so readably it swept me along like a good novel. Dr Guarneri began to question why someone who had had stents, for example, and had then done everything they should - not smoking, eating well, exercising - would return to her in a short time right back where they had been. From the medical model she was trained in, it did not make any sense. But she was one of those rare people who can step out of the mindset they are trained in and think outside their profession's usual box.

So she began to look at research into many different ways physical health and emotion are linked. She reports much of what she found in this readable and fascinating account. It is amazing to learn, for instance, just how much our emotional state and social support predict the outcome in coronary heart disease compared with physical factors like the degree to which our arteries are blocked. Amazing - and empowering.

I have been recommending this book by one of the pioneers of integrative medicine to my therapy students for years and have given a few copies as presents to non-therapists. I have always had good feedback from both groups.

I bought this book on recommendation from a medical doctor involved in yoga/yoga therapy during a workshop in which we discussed the influence of the heart on the mind and vice versa. Very interesting topic, which opened quite a few insights for me and helps me to understand my (yoga) students and myself better. The book goes deeper into the topic and is written clearly and with simple language for all to understand. Even if you are not in health service of any kind, I would recommend this book.
