5.0 out of 5 stars Fired my passion 3 Feb 2011
By phorth
Format:Hardcover
I am currently doing a Maths degree at the Open University and this book is absolutley delightful! The subjects it tackles range from some pretty easy stuff but leads into some deeper subject matter. For example, the chapter on topology starts with a fairly easy description what topology is, moves through playing about with a Möbius band, introduces graph theory via the Königsberg bridge problem and finishes with the Brouwer Fixed point Theorem. It does all this in a fantastically fun way that stimulates and challenges your thinking.

Throughout the book the emphasis is on developing your ability to think for yourself and how various thought techniques are re-usable elsewhere. For example the technique of "Understanding simple things deeply" is applied to moving from the finite to the infinite.

Each chapter is jam-packed with interesting questions (most with hints and some with fuller answers) for you to solidify your understanding.

After getting a little jaded with "rote" problem solving for my degree this has re-fired my passion for Maths as a subject and given me an insight into how investigative Maths is done.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Maths book I have ever read 7 Feb 2010
Format:Hardcover
Frightened of Maths - read this - it is so easy to read and so easy to understand - yes even complex things like infinity and all that Jazz. If you hated maths at school, and want to give it another try this is the book for you - how maths should be taught - not with lots of complex formula, and proofs of 1 line, but logically written and easy to read - trust me - I wish some English Professor would write a book on English like this

1.0 out of 5 stars Ridiculously priced 11 Jun 2014
By Andreas Lohr - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is getting ridiculous. When I added this book to my wish list, the price was around ~130. The current price is 200.85. This is what people who don't understand math pay. I presume there is some stupid price algorithm at work.

Very detailed and specific, I think my professor is a big part of why I like this book a lot but the book it's self is very specific and explains things in two forms, mathematical and english.
