I cannot believe the critics slated this film. I found the acting and the direction amazing. The film is true to the book and in the same way although it is about subjects that are both upsetting and difficult to deal with it leaves you with a feeling of hope. I think it paints the picture extremely vividly and whilst you could never agree with Sarah's treatment of JT you do gain an understanding of why she is the way she is, as she is the product of a very troubled past which has obviously done irrepairable damage. It also manages to portray the love JT has for Sarah despite everything and the way he wants to protect her even though it is she who should have been protecting him. It leaves you with the sense that even though JT had to struggle through great adversity he came through it and not only survived but is a strong and very special person because of it. It is a harsh look at a reality most of us are lucky to never have to be a part of but it is dealt with in a way which whilst telling the story openly doesn't glorify or relish in the ugliness of the situations. That is why I recommend you should see this film.

whether or not the author is a hoax is irrelevant.. film makers don't come along like this everyday.. asia argento is amazing, both as an actress and a director.. i truely believed that she could ahve been in the situations her character was in.

and mad respect for the kids who played jeremiah.. those twins aren't going 2 be known as 'ben' from friends if they continue to put in performances like this..

highly recommended!!!

roll on sarah!!

Although very gritty and unsettling subjects, I feel this film should be praised for the way Asia Argento deals with it. Both as a director and as Sarah, Argento is stunning beyond words.Heartbreaking, the film shows JTs undying devotion to his mother even though she cruel beyond words. However, the film never judges, only portrays why Sarah is who she is and why things happen to JT. It really is a unique portrayal of life that still happens and I strongly recommend it.

I'd been wanting to see this movie ever since I'd heard about it. I didn't manage to catch it at the cinema, it had a very limited release, but wow, it's worth waiting for.
Based on the book by JT Leroy, which is in turn based on his early life, and directed by and starring Asia Argento, this book charts the early years of Jeremiah, a child taken back from his foster parents by his mother, and dragged around from seedy motel to violent relationship and back again. He ends up with his fanantically religious grandparents for a while, which is little better, before being taken away by his mother again.
I was bowled over by the sheer quality of the acting, the direction, the cinematography, everything. It's a shocking, painful film, but it has a strange beauty. I was expecting it to be hard to watch, but the film just flew by. Really worth seeing if you fancy something different.

A harrowing, brave, tortured love story not for the faint of heart...
Unfortunately there are many people that will confuse this unpleasant story as a bad film,
let me say that to you (("The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things")) is a very good film about unpleasant life ...to see this film you need two things
1-you must have a strong stomach
2-you must control your rage at the awfulness and nightmare types of abuse no sane person can contemplate thrown in.
Written and directed by Asia Argento (Scarlet Diva, XXX, Land Of The Dead), and shot by Eric Alan Edwards (Kids, My Own Private Idaho), The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things boasts a stunning cast that includes Academy Award® nominee Peter Fonda,
Jeremy Renner (North Country), Michael Pitt (Hedwig And The Angry Inch, Last Days), Marilyn Manson, John Robinson (Elephant, Lords Of Dogtown), Jimmy Bennett (Poseidon, Polar Express, Daddy Day Care) and Cole and Dylan Sprouse as Jeremiah.

but let me say this again
so this kid goes through hell and back to hell
It's a shocking,
and very painful film..

I bought this movie after reading so many rave reviews.
The movie is based around a little boy who's iressponsible, prostitute mother regains custidy over him because he wasput up for adoption at birth because she was only fourteen when he was born, taking him away from his stable foster parents. When I first watched this film a thought the lead character (his mother Sarah) who is played by Asia Argento was Courtney Love playing Courtney Love! When I found out it was Argento (who also directed the film) I figured she probably based some apects of the character on Love (pretty much all aspects actually), but her performance is amazing, she IS Sarah.
Also, for me one othe stand-out performance was of her son (young) Jeremiah (played by Jimmy Bennett) is phenomenal coming from someone so young & innocent.
The movie is often painful to watch, its like watching a case study for extreme child abuse.
Jeremiah's future is pretty bleak, there are rare moments of joy for the child who does everything in his power to please Sarah but doesn't get the love & affection he craves.
Sarah is clearly mentally ill, not just an alcoholic slash drug addict, there's something mentally thats not quite right, possibly a result of her devout religious up bringing, which gives a minimal insight into her past which gives her a depth that would not have been obtained if her family had not been mentioned in the film.
This is definitely not for the faint hearted & if you're looking for an enjoyable, entertaining film, this is the last movie I'd recommend, but if your looking for a good independent film adaptation of a J.T Leroy novel, this is your best choice.
