Product Description

Product Description

Tao, the most ancient and fundamental element in the world's oldest civilization, is as relevant to today's world as to classical China. For the contemporary reader, this readable and practical book is the first to explore in the light of the findings of modern Western Science, the balanced and comprehensive system of health care used by Chinese physicians, martial artists and meditators for over 5000 years. Daniel Reid has combined his personal experience with original research to focus on three specific aspects of Tao - health, sex and longevity - the inter-related foundations of human happiness. In an accessible and often anecdotal style he introduces the philosophy of Tao and presents the issues and answers of practical concern to a Western audience. The book covers every aspect of health with concise information on diet and nutrition, fasting and excretion, Taoist sexual yoga for health and longevity breathing and exercise, medicine, meditation and their relevant topics. Preventative approaches for fighting of disease and debility and for achieving mental and physical harmony are emphasized. Detailed guidance is given on selecting proper foods, combining them correctly and on detoxifying your system. Breathing exercises and Chinese callisthenics are carefully explained and helpfully illustrated, as are the Taoist bedroom arts.

I'm amazed by this book and have found it to be insightful and enlightening. The research that Daniel has conducted, can only show that the Chinese people are truly in touch with nature and the human body. The sections on diet and nutrition have shown me the benefits when you follow his advise and look after yourself. I can only advise others to try the exercises an suggestions contained within the pages of this book. I myself constantly refer to this book and have highighted specific passages that have a profound impact to sustaining a healthy and fruitful life. I also recommend reading Chi-Gung by Daniel Reid, a great book indeed.

I first encountered this book in my early 20's and it has not been far from my bedside ever since. It sits there now with several pages ear-marked and many passages highlighted in lurid flourescent pen. As well as presenting the rich history of the tao, the literature and the culture which enshrines it, Reid has rooted a sometomes too mystical subject to the practicalities of everyday life. Dietary guidance is easily found, as are exercises to waken the body's energy and tune in the mind. The section on sexual health and practices could be published as a best-selling volume in itself. One does not need to dedicate one's life to being a taoist adept to profit from the tradition of the tao. I cannot recommend this book enough, and I am already impressed by his latest - Guarding The Three Treasures.

I used the information in this book to successfully lower my blood pressure and cholestrol readings. I found the book to be extremely informative with very detailed explanations of the different processes undertaken by the body when advising for or against different food and drinks. Following the logical reasoning behind each prohibition made choosing or avoiding certain foods very easy.

This book would be invaluable for anyone with health problems of any sort. I intend to use the information Daniel Reid provides to keep myself healthy in mind body and spirit.
