I first encountered this book in my early 20's and it has not been far from my bedside ever since. It sits there now with several pages ear-marked and many passages highlighted in lurid flourescent pen. As well as presenting the rich history of the tao, the literature and the culture which enshrines it, Reid has rooted a sometomes too mystical subject to the practicalities of everyday life. Dietary guidance is easily found, as are exercises to waken the body's energy and tune in the mind. The section on sexual health and practices could be published as a best-selling volume in itself. One does not need to dedicate one's life to being a taoist adept to profit from the tradition of the tao. I cannot recommend this book enough, and I am already impressed by his latest - Guarding The Three Treasures.
