For serious practitioners of Buddhist meditation who are interested in loving-kindness, this book and set of three CDs offers an exceptional and (perhaps) unique contribution to loving-kindness teachings. To begin with, Tulku Thondup is the genuine article. He was raised and educated in a monastery in East Tibet until he fled to India in 1958, eventually coming to the West in 1980 as a visiting scholar at Harvard, and then continuing to live in Cambridge, MA. Tulku Thondup is wise, humble, and articulate, combing deep practice with an intellectual and practical understanding of traditional Tibetan Buddhist teachings. The gem of this book/CDs are the 2nd and 3rd CD disks which, taken together, are a two-hour guided meditation on loving-kindness that provides the listener with a rich and transforming journey. I have practiced and taught meditation, mostly in the Insight Meditation tradition, for the past 25 years. I know of no better guide to loving-kindness practice than this. But, one must be prepared to spend an hour or so at a stretch for purposes of the guided meditation practice.
