This is an in depth, instructional manual that describes most vehicle electrical systems from base principles.
The writing style is very clear, though some of the pictures are difficult to interpret.

Unfortunately, some of the information needs updating. The published date is 2006, but the text occasionally refers to the 1990's in the future tense and some of the illustrations are not relevant to modern vehicles. Statements such as 'All batteries need regular maintenance, topping up with de-ionised water' may have been true in 1981.

That said, ECU's, common rail diesel engines, glow plugs and engine management are well covered and include vital post 2005 information.

Knowing very little about vehicle maintenance, I have learned a lot from this book and have not found a better introduction.

convenient large format manual with easy to follow style
good coverage from basic power generation [great for geeks] thro to basic circuits and sophisticated controls
well worth the money which would soon pay for itself

Ideal for beginners 10 Nov 2011
Admittedly the manual is full of the basics with good illustrations. I was however looking for a manual that would shed more light on checking out engine management systems and that had a basic check list to suggest probable faults enabling one to eliminate and trace faults. This manual didn't really help much at all. Admittedly my one car is a 1995 K Series Rover with MEMs and there isn't much listed about it. It certainly isn't any use for my later 2005 Rover 75.
The manual would suit someone who wants to know the basic theory behind car electronics, especially those components fitted on earlier cars, but for 1995 on vehicles I don't feel this manual would be much help. I'd rather have seen the contents before buying, which would have saved me wasting my money - that's not to say its not good - but just not relevant to my requirements.
