Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

In the prime of his successful, happy existence attorney Bill Wyeth suffers a ghastly tragedy that he might have prevented. It robs him of everything and everyone he values--his family, home, wealth and career. His subsequent slide into oblivion is arrested by Allison Sparks, a restaurateur who involves him in a complicated real estate transaction on behalf of her lover, the owner of a valuable parcel of land on Long Island. The circumstances of the last-minute deal are unusual enough to set off warning bells in Wyeth's mind, but he agrees to help Jay Rainey pull it off in exchange for access to the Havana Room, a private club in the basement of Allison's restaurant, whose mysterious members and their activities have long intrigued him.

Handling a complicated plot with consummate ease, maintaining a high level of dramatic tension during a brilliantly paced narrative and creating a complex cast of unusual minor characters as well as a wholly believable, sympathetic protagonist, Colin Harrison has written a riveting novel that grabs the reader from the beginning and doesn't let go. The Havana Room is a terrific, original, engrossing read by a masterful writer. --Jane Adams, Amazon.com --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

'No-one delivers a sharper thriller than the superb Colin Harrison' Mail on Sunday 'Writing with striking assurance, Harrison brings to a John Grisham-like story a stylistic panache ... without forfeiting his page-turning grip on the reader' Sunday Times 'Compelling and suspenseful, this is entertainment with a wicked edge' Guardian 'A real page-turner' Observer --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Just my opinion... 16 Mar 2012
Format:Paperback
I found the writing descriptive and engaging. Characters were "life size". Carried me to the last page. Enjoyed the unusual "health" slant. As a nurse,it added an extra dimension for me. Will read more from this writer.

I picked it up as a remainder, sorry Colin, but it leaps off the page. All the characters live. None are cyphers, dropped in place to carry some plot point forward, as so often happens.
There is a big 'really?' at the heart of the plot but that aside, worth a pop.
Also, early on there is a three or four page potted history of real estate in NY that is a total tour de force.
I'll read more by this writer without a doubt.

Great book, gripping right from the opening pages, no doubt since I fit broadly into the character mould described. (A big, if slightly rueful thanks to John, my good friend, who picked me out as such a person)

Slightly obvious in places, but fun nonetheless. I enjoyed the long descriptions giving depth and breadth to the story for me.

A perfect book for the solicitor, banker or city worker who dreams of a crisis they get sucked into which is frightening, dangerous and sexy but where they can show their true resourcefulness and solve a puzzle which is beyond everyone else!
