Review

"Anne Fine must now be considered in the same ranks as her more venerable rivals from the last two decades of the best writing for children. Everything she does is good and true." (The Independent) "Low on long words and high on high jinks... Each book contains a rip-roaring story by a top author." (The Young Telegraph on the Sprinters series)"

Book Description

A deliciously spooky Christmas tale by the 2001-2003 Children's Laureate.

Format:Paperback
The story is told by Pip. She is scared of an image on her bedroom wall and it is stopping her from sleeping every night. She has asked her parents to help but they never see it. She even ignores the run up to Xmas because she is so tired trying to stay awake so that the 'thing' won't get her.

On Xmas eve as Santa (!) puts her presents in her room she realises the image is caused by the landing light coming in through the keyhole in her door. She fills the whole with with paper and can finally relax. She thinks that this is the best Xmas present ever. At last she can enjoy herself - but she is tired out!

This main theme of this book is suspense, and it is a little scarey until page 55 when the reason for the shadow is divulged.

It would be a good book for lower primary age children because it is only short (60 pages) and has illustrations on every page. The only problem is if it prompts awkward questions about who is delivering the presents!

A girl named Pip can't get to sleep on Christmas Eve because of a glowing skull shape on the wall.Pip thinks it is haunting her.She is ok at her friends house though.Everyone thinks she is imaganing things. How does Pip get rid of the skull shape on the wall?
What I like about the book is that it is quite scary but as you read the story you have an idea about what it is that is haunting her.
I would recommend this book to any children over the age of 6.
