The story is told by Pip. She is scared of an image on her bedroom wall and it is stopping her from sleeping every night. She has asked her parents to help but they never see it. She even ignores the run up to Xmas because she is so tired trying to stay awake so that the 'thing' won't get her.
On Xmas eve as Santa (!) puts her presents in her room she realises the image is caused by the landing light coming in through the keyhole in her door. She fills the whole with with paper and can finally relax. She thinks that this is the best Xmas present ever. At last she can enjoy herself - but she is tired out!
This main theme of this book is suspense, and it is a little scarey until page 55 when the reason for the shadow is divulged.
It would be a good book for lower primary age children because it is only short (60 pages) and has illustrations on every page. The only problem is if it prompts awkward questions about who is delivering the presents!
