2.0 out of 5 stars DO YOU LIKE BEING SCARED? 15 May 2014
By The Movie Guy TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
The film opens a bit confusing as it appears to be a trailer for itself. This picture has nothing to do with the infamous Bates Motel, other than the name. A family operates a haunted hayride/farm in Gradyville, Pa. Agnes (Jean Louise O'Sullivan) witnesses her best friend Lillie (Aleksandra Svetlichnaya) die. Agnes' life has gone down hill. Her policeman dad (Robert Haag) and by far the worse actor in this film, forces Agnes to work at that same haunted Bates farm as therapy.

Soon everyone around her is being murdered. The film operates as a who-dun-it for the first hour with the formula cat and mouse ending.

The role of Robert Haag as a policeman was indeed a downer. The film did create some unique characters such as Wayne (Matthew Mastronardi) a masked gay chainsaw killer. This has some similarities to 80's style slasher films, but lacks style.

Works as a low end rental at best.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, nudity (Dawn Sobolewski)

2.0 out of 5 stars Truly odd slasher movie. 9 April 2014
Format:DVD
The cover clearly titles the movie "Hotel" while everything within the movie refers to Bates "Motel". During the opening title sequence a new title has clearly been inserted to change the title to Bates Hotel and I can only assume this is to avoid legal action by Universal Studios.

This film has no connection to the Norman Bates/Psycho series.

It is in fact set at a genuine tourist attraction/ theme park located outside Philadelphia which opens for the month of October annually. Patrons pay to be taken through a series of elaborate horror sets while "actors" jump out to scare them. As a result, the sets are far better than you would expect from this very low budget slasher movie. There is nothing original about the plot, however, I won't give away any details just in case you decide to buy.

It is thankfully short - 74 minutes - but the acting is pretty poor. The director obviously struggled to decide whether to go for all out spoof or straight horror. This means that the sporadic attempts at humour jar rather than enhance proceedings.

So what you get is a pedestrian slasher movie, poorly acted but with better than average sets and props. It's really only for hard core fans of the genre.

1.0 out of 5 stars avoid 26 Sep 2014
Format:Amazon Instant Video
As nothing to do with Norman and his motel, misleading cover. It's about an attraction called Bates hotel obviously changed due to copyright but it's a filmed at this real attraction. Awful plot- nobody knows what is going on it as no substance and is very boring. One quote that stood out was when junior is been interviewed an he's talking about how 'family friendly' his ride is... but people have died.... the reporter says 'well it happens people have died at Disneyland' in such a innocent tone how this was allowed I don't know! I wouldn't waste your time or money on this film leave it on the shelves at asda people ! Awful film awful acting it shows Ryan Dunn and bam from jackass at beginning the only plus to this movie seems they lived in the area!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Odd, but strangely enjoyable 25 April 2014
By Amazon Customer TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
First things first, despite the very misleading DVD cover, 'The Haunting Of Bates Hotel' bares very little resemblance to anything related to the 'Psycho' movies. Indeed, Alfred Hitchcock would possibly turn in his grave if he was to see this horror farce.

However, it is almost like watching a parody of the original 'Psycho' movie in theme park attraction form. 'The Haunting Of Bates Hotel' revolves around a haunted, family based attraction, located in Pennsylvania. The family has the surname Bates, hence the name of the park. In fact, 'Bates Motel' is actually a real life attraction, and the movie opens with an actual advertisement for the place. There's no shortage of advertising throughout the movie, with regular vocal acknowledgements as to where the movie is set, alongside regularly appearing shots of signs advertising various attractions there. I can see why they obviously decided to do this, but it does become annoying.

As for the story, after a year of being haunted by the memory of her best friend who was roasted in an accident at 'Bates Hotel', Agnes lands a job (thanks to her father) there. She reluctantly befriends her fellow workers, but even before the park opens, some of them are slain, resulting in very grizzly ends (a couple actually meet their maker via a combine harvester). The murderer is clearly involved with the park, but there are more than enough 'suspects' working there to keep the viewers guessing to the very end as to who is behind these slayings.

Now, I know this like not be for everyone. Some might say it's a load of old rubbish (and perhaps it is), but I did find myself enjoying it, and would actually watch a squeal.

1.0 out of 5 stars worst £7 i ever spent. 26 Jun 2014
Format:DVD
I'm genuinely surprised this stuff is allowed to be sold its that awful. You cant even call it a film. I knew it was going to be awful just from the adverts shown before the film. I think I lasted about 15 minutes. Acting was awful, camera guys were awful and I wasn't sure if it was meant to be a spoof or a horror..
