"This book contains hundreds of fantastic patterns to try" Quick and Crafty, August 2008

Product Description

If you're looking for stitch inspiration, "Basic Crochet Stitches" brims with new and old stitches to delight crocheters of all skill levels. A single Cluster Crochet Stitch makes a great foundation pattern for a textured scarf; a Trinity stitch adds warmth to any afghan design. Or why not glam up a shawl with a striking Hexagon stitch? All swatches are worked in updated yarns, beautifully photographed and accompanied by easy-to-follow instructions. "The Harmony Guides" have been longstanding references for handcrafters for more than thirty years, with over half a million worldwide sales. C&B is proud to announce that internationally renowned best-selling author and knitting expert Erika Knight will be steering the series on its new journey. All titles will be fully revised and updated with eye-catching photography and innovative new stitches, but also never forgetting the heritage of the guides, these really will be the only reference titles on any crocheter's bookshelves.

First Sentence
I was first charmed by crochet when I saw the delicate edging on white cotton pillowcases, fine linen table cloths, and decorative anti-macassars found in thrift shops and yard sales, created and crafted by anonymous women whose proficiency and passion were evident in every stitch. Read the first page

This is an appalling book. Do not buy this if you are a beginner as you will end up confused through no fault of your own. The author mixes up UK and US crocheting terminology without even mentioning (as every other crochet book does) that the two are NOT the same - they use similar names for different stitches. They show you how to do a stitch and then say you have now made [a completely different stitch]. They show you how to do a stitch and then refer to it in a completely different way for the rest of the book, and still don't mention the confusion over the names. They also make a mistake in the very first stitch pattern, which does not give you confidence in following any of their instructions.
Erika Knight has written some very good knitting and crochet books, so I don't know if this is her fault, but someone should be sacked for allowing such a poorly produced book to be sold to unsuspecting customers.

Such a shame - if you're NOT a beginner then this book is a great resource, provided that you can work your way around all the proofreading mistakes mentioned in the previous review. I imagine the book was first published in America and then rewritten with UK terminology for the UK market. Unfortunately, as the previous reviewer mentioned, this hasn't been done properly and the book is riddled with errors where within one stitch description both UK and US terminology is used. This is very confusing. I consider myself a 'bilingual' crocheter - I can follow English or American patterns, but trying to follow one that's a bit of both is another matter entirely! For someone with intermediate or advanced experience who can live with this and work out what to do following the charts and pictures, it's great. I'm finding it very useful indeed (and I'd say I'm intermediate experience level) BUT I was appalled to find such fundamental proofreading errors right from the start of the book.

To sum up - if you want great pictures and great stitches and you don't mind treating this as some sort of puzzle book where you have to keep spotting the 'deliberate mistakes' then fine - but beginner beware!

I hope one day the publisher will do a reprint and get this right, or at the very least produce an errata sheet!

This product is very good if you wish to extend you crochet knowledge and try out new stitches and is what it says in the title crochet stitches but no patterns to use them with.
