Book Description

8 Oct 2007 The Harmony Guides
Along with colour and silhouette, texture and dimension play a vital role in the interest of a design. 'Cables & Arans' is a one-stop reference for inspiration, brimming with 250 texture-friendly designs to delight knitters of all skill levels. An Oxo Ripple makes a dapper stitch for a man's scarf and a Medallion Ripple enhances any basic jumper. A Honeycomb Pattern is an excellent choice for a sumptuous and cosy afghan. All swatches are worked in updated yarns, beautifully photographed and accompanied by easy-to-follow instructions. 'Cables & Arans', along with 'Knit & Purl' and 'Lace & Eyelets', is one of the premier titles of this new series. 'The Harmony Guides' have been longstanding references for handcrafters for more than thirty years. C&B is proud to announce that internationally renowned best-selling author and knitting expert Erica Knight will be steering the series on its new journey. All titles will be fully revised and updated with eye-catching photography and innovative new stitches, but also never forgetting the heritage of the guides, these really will be the only reference titles on any knitter's bookshelves.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 21 Oct 2012
I borrowed this book from the library because I wanted to use the very first stitch pattern - Small Cable with Grooves (p22). However, the instructions produce a broad rib pseudo cable pattern which is nothing like the accompanying photograph. The pattern in the photo is a travelling stitch pattern (which might just pass as a small cable) of, at a guess, 16 stitches and 16 rows.

I hunted down the errata ([...]) but this is not included.

Aside from that, there's a lot of repetition in the patterns - adding an extra stitch or two to a cable doesn't create a completely new pattern: just a slightly wider (and ideally longer) version. There are at least 3 variants on the classic OXO cable (Interlocking Cable (p.114), OXO Cable (p. 183), Linked Rings (p. 185)), and the Woven Cable Stitch I (p. 62), the Tight Braid Cable (p. 86) and the Chequered Cable (p. 103) are basically the same pattern. There are others, but I'm bored now.

3.0 out of 5 stars poorly organised 12 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Like the other books in this series, not well organised. It would be far more useful to the serious knitter if the patterns were grouped by similar types. Also, why do some of the patterns have a chart while others don't?
There are also random helpful hints that are scattered throughout the book - which are difficult to go back and find when you need them. A little too random. It seems like the look of the book has taken priority over the usefulness of the book.
Beautiful photos, but doesn't match up to other books available at the moment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Every knitter should have one 9 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
There is so much of value in this book, so many different patterns - and
I am keeping it close at hand - Might even try making up a pattern. Because
if you are new to Aran and Cable - there are so many neat instructions - so
easy to follow - get yourself a little cable needle and start

3.0 out of 5 stars Replacement of my old Harmany Guides 5 Oct 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this to replace my old books I have but after a disastrous start with the Knit and Purl patterns I am not holding my breath that all the patterns in this will be correct and have been proofread properly. I wait to see and will update as I progress through the patterns.
