Product Description

Product Description

An Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, novel 'They will play with us, then destroy us...They are what we fear in the dark.' The first warning is unexpected, calculated. The second warning is a gift: a plain white mask, carefully wrapped. But white is good -- white means we are only being watched. It seems the power that connects me, Anita Blake, with Jean-Claude Vampire Master of the City and Richard, leader of the werewolves, is attracting very unwelcome attention -- from creatures so feared no vampire will willingly speak their name. They are known as the Harlequin, and they have the authority to pass judgement upon me. It is forbidden to speak of the Harlequin unless you've been contacted. And to be contacted is to face a sentence of death.

In this book Laurell gets it all right, we have the action, drama, sex and Edward all in one book, finally an enemy with a little bite, pardon the pun. This is the first book in which all the characters in Anita's world are brought together, and she does it seamlessly, everybody has their moment in the spotlight, the plot is sharp and concise with no extraneous scenes. Her best to date.

Yes yes yes! 19 Feb 2012

I must admit, the last few books felt wrong. They lost a lot of the Anita Blake flare; they were overcomplicated in their small and many pointless details. They also concentrated almost exclusively on only two elements: the first being the new and developing powers Anita and the others gain, the second being the multiple relationships. Not a necessarily bad thing, but it really went too far and made the plots shallow.

I persevered, both because i like to see a series through to the end, and because i had faith in Anita, Jean-Claude and others as character. In the end i was rewarded with this book. It's almost back to where the series started in that the story has the same feel, it has a real plot-line that carries the series forward and adds intrigue, mystery and action whilst balancing with the emotional aspects raised in the previous few books (but does not allow them to overpower the plot). In short, a very nice recovery for the series.

If the books keep to this standard then I will be thrilled, because truly, the last few, though readable, lost a lot of the series' charm. Glad to see that things have improved.

That said, the earlier books are still better in my opinion, hence 4 instead of 5 stars. However, a very good read, thoroughly enjoyable.

Ah yes, Anita strikes again.... and what a thoroughly dislikeable, self-righteous, arrogant harpy she is. This time Anita is sentencing a group of local weres to death (and but of course, this bland human has such far fetched power to authorise such a thing). And what have these bad weres done to deserve such a punishment? Murder everybody that Anita holds dear? No of course not. The leader has unforgivably refused to have sex with her because he loves his wife. What an abomination. Kill him, kill them all. Note to all. If you refuse to be raped by Anita, then you will be punished with death.

That aside, the concept of a story returns in this book, sort of. It's not the greatest story ever and you would think the presence of the Harlequin would provide Hamilton with an excuse to be much more creative and terrifying. Instead, The Harlequin spend most of their time in the background making pathetic long distance attempts at attack. Meanwhile, Hamilton puts us through more torture with continued discussions of the ardeur and relationships. Utterly pointless, as little has changed since the last five books, and that which has could be explained in a couple of pages.

I wish I had not started reading these books because I feel compelled to get through the series. I am hoping Bullet is the last but I have a feeling Hamilton is going to write books about the ardeur forever.
