More About the Author

Zoë Harcombe's passion is obesity. People want to be slim more than they want virtually anything else in the world and yet two thirds of people in the 'developed' world are overweight and one quarter to one third are obese. This makes no sense.

Zoë was the first pupil from her school to graduate from Cambridge University. Whilst studying maths and economics at this historic institution, Zoë set out to answer the million dollar question - Why do you overeat? When all you want is to be slim? This became the title of Zoë's first book - published in 2004. Stop Counting Calories & Start Losing Weight followed in 2008, with an accompanying recipe book and The Obesity Epidemic: What caused it? How can we stop it? was published in October 2010.

Having worked internationally as an HR Director/VP at blue chip organisations such as Mars, SmithKline Beecham and the Welsh Development Agency, Zoë left corporate life in 2008 to make diet and health her full time role. Since then, Zoë has set up The Harcombe Diet club, to provide on line support for people rejecting processed food in favour of what we should be eating - real food.

Zoë has a Diploma in Diet & Nutrition and a Diploma in Clinical Weight Management, but struggles to find anything that is being taught in 'conventional' nutritional worlds that is true or evidence based. Hence why she spent 2008-10 writing The Obesity Epidemic - 135,000 words blowing apart: the misapplication of thermodynamics to dieting; the notion that 1lb = 3,500 calories, let alone that a deficit of 3,500 calories will lead to a weight loss of 1lb; the Seven Countries Study and the subequent change in our diet advice, which has caused the obesity epidemic; the role of exercise in obesity and much more.

Zoë's personal values are health, relationships, personal development, mutuality and integrity. The order of the first two has not changed in 20 years. Her personal goal is two fold and complementary - to do whatever can be done to reverse the horrific, man-made, obesity epidemic and to make a difference in the lives of others.

Zoë lives in the Welsh countryside with her husband, Andy, a rescue dog and a rescue cat. Andy descibes her as friendly, enthusiastic, principled, chatty, passionate and short! She is a member of Mensa, but friends say she hides it well! Oher passions are rugby - especially Wales - cocoa & cocoa butter (i.e. real chocolate), the RSPCA, World Wildlife Fund and dinner parties. There can be little better in life than great company and great food - more of both and the world would be a happier and healthier place.

5.0 out of 5 stars The one diet that works for me! 25 Oct 2011
I bought this book about 4 months ago at a time when I was looking to lose some weight and haven't looked back. It's a simple read that concentrates the principles behind The Harcombe Diet (a larger book which I've also since purchased). For me this has been the one diet book that has actually worked LONG TERM. I've tried all sorts of other diets and whilst some have been effective, none of them have really enabled me to maintain a constant level of weight after the initial weight loss.

The Harcombe diet has been great because you can still enjoy the good things in life - cheese, wine, fried breakfasts, steak etc. You just have to be careful about what you eat them with. It that sense it's more of a lifestyle change to the way you eat and it's one that has worked for me and my partner so far. Collectively we have lost over 2 stone and are continuing to lose weight whilst still eating large portions of fantastic food! We also feel so much better, having almost completely eradicated sugar from our daily diet (no more sugar lows at 11am for us!).

I love the fact that you don't have to watch how much you eat, as long as you're eating the right foods. This means no calories or points to count each day which is a breath of fresh air!

The only drawback I've found is that it can be hard finding foods to accommodate the diet when you're out at parties and functions. Having said this, I've found you can cheat on this diet and still maintain/lose weight as long as you keep it in moderation.

Overall this is a great read and actually a common sense take on dieting and a total departure from traditional calorie counting diets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - Easy - Straightforward - WORKS!! 24 Oct 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I started this diet at a weight of 18 stones 1lb. I have now lost 43lbs and have got more energy than when I was in my teens!

The book is really easy to read and puts things in a way that is appealing to men of all ages and backgrounds.

Zoë has clearly done a great deal of research and the amount of diet myths that get debunked in here is amazing.

I love not having to count or weigh food and I have now realized that the only parts of steak and chips worth eating is the steak - the chips are pretty tasteless when you think about it.
If you want to lose the beer-gut; this book is definitely for you!

Real food is AWESOME!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant for all blokes, not just Fat Guys 26 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I love Zoe Harcombe. I always devour all the refreshing articles, interviews and commentary I come across. She's such an unrestrained thinker and is so thorough in her research that her unconventional views stand up robustly and unshakeable against the inevitable indignant guffaws of the low-fat mainstream views - a maintream which really does seem to have got it wrong. I was lucky enough to meet Zoe once, and her husband Andy, and I want to be like him!

There are several great things about this book. First, it works. Second, as others have commented, it is a very digestible format so people can just get on with it. Third, it's for any men, not just fat men. I combine her eating philosophy with lots of exercise and it works so well. I am not overweight and not looking to "diet", but I want to be healthy and eat in a way that makes sense long term. This is an easy ticket to adjusting the way you eat and concentrating on combinations of foods that have made me feel healthier, stronger, more energetic, less hungry - because Zoe seems to understand better than anybody how the human body really responds to what you put in it.

It's not crazy, it's grounded in science and effective and it's easy for all men to try out. Well done Zoe, you've taken your great ideas another step closer to getting the appreciation they deserve.

5.0 out of 5 stars A work of near genius 5 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a middle aged guy with a weight problem, I had been on a diet for 12 weeks of the year for the past 5 years or so, until I read this book. I no longer have to diet because the principles outlined in the book are easily sustainable throughout the year, so I have actually stopped dieting, lost a lot of weight and enjoyed all the benifits of being slim and energised, while enjoying all the foods I like, fry-ups, wine, cheese etc. The biggest discovery I made was finding I had very bad candida (yeast infection), got this under control and was almost transformed overnite, it as done wonders for my love life and confidence, thx Zoe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lose weight eating the good stuff 25 Oct 2011
The Harcombe Diet for Men gives a more simplistic version of the Harcombe Diet.
I have read some of the other books by Zoe Harcombe, some of which go into incredible detail (The Obesity Epidemic especially) but this book tends to stick to what you need to know and how to lose weight. I love the fact the diet is not calorie based, the opposite in fact, and that it emphasises good food rather than any branded processed junk.
Worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect weight loss plan for Men 24 Sep 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Having tried this foolproof way of eating healthily and losing weight and being proof that it works - I was happy to find a shorter, easy to read version which I gifted to a male colleague. Short, concise and down to earth - this book has convinced him and the results are showing after only 10 days.
Well done once again Zoe Harcombe. You know how to inspire. It all makes sense. No gimmicks, no fees, no special foods, and no hunger! Quality and quantity are the keys words here.
