More About the Author

Zoë Harcombe's passion is obesity. People want to be slim more than they want virtually anything else in the world and yet two thirds of people in the 'developed' world are overweight and one quarter to one third are obese. This makes no sense.

Zoë was the first pupil from her school to graduate from Cambridge University. Whilst studying maths and economics at this historic institution, Zoë set out to answer the million dollar question - Why do you overeat? When all you want is to be slim? This became the title of Zoë's first book - published in 2004. Stop Counting Calories & Start Losing Weight followed in 2008, with an accompanying recipe book and The Obesity Epidemic: What caused it? How can we stop it? was published in October 2010.

Having worked internationally as an HR Director/VP at blue chip organisations such as Mars, SmithKline Beecham and the Welsh Development Agency, Zoë left corporate life in 2008 to make diet and health her full time role. Since then, Zoë has set up The Harcombe Diet club, to provide on line support for people rejecting processed food in favour of what we should be eating - real food.

Zoë has a Diploma in Diet & Nutrition and a Diploma in Clinical Weight Management, but struggles to find anything that is being taught in 'conventional' nutritional worlds that is true or evidence based. Hence why she spent 2008-10 writing The Obesity Epidemic - 135,000 words blowing apart: the misapplication of thermodynamics to dieting; the notion that 1lb = 3,500 calories, let alone that a deficit of 3,500 calories will lead to a weight loss of 1lb; the Seven Countries Study and the subequent change in our diet advice, which has caused the obesity epidemic; the role of exercise in obesity and much more.

Zoë's personal values are health, relationships, personal development, mutuality and integrity. The order of the first two has not changed in 20 years. Her personal goal is two fold and complementary - to do whatever can be done to reverse the horrific, man-made, obesity epidemic and to make a difference in the lives of others.

Zoë lives in the Welsh countryside with her husband, Andy, a rescue dog and a rescue cat. Andy descibes her as friendly, enthusiastic, principled, chatty, passionate and short! She is a member of Mensa, but friends say she hides it well! Oher passions are rugby - especially Wales - cocoa & cocoa butter (i.e. real chocolate), the RSPCA, World Wildlife Fund and dinner parties. There can be little better in life than great company and great food - more of both and the world would be a happier and healthier place.

About the Author

Zoë was the first pupil from her state school to graduate from Cambridge University, having won a scholarship to read mathematics/economics at this famous institution. What no one knew at the time was that, having been anorexic as a teenager, Zoë had developed bulimia before starting her studies at Cambridge. She sat in her historic room, stuffing her face with food, and asked the million dollar question: “Why do I overeat? When all I want is to be slim?” So started over a decade of research into obesity, overeating and weight loss. During her 20’s Zoë experienced food cravings to rival any drug addiction and discovered that there are three medical conditions that cause these food cravings. And so her first book came about: “Why do you overeat? When all you want is to be slim.” Published in 2004, it continues to change the lives of people who read it. Since putting her own advice into practice, Zoë has lived craving free and a constant 8 stone for over 15 years. She no longer suffers from any of the conditions that cause insatiable cravings and she knows how to make sure that these conditions never return. “Stop Counting Calories & Start Losing Weight: The Harcombe Diet” was first published in 2008, to share the message with readers world-wide. This recipe book is the perfect accompaniment to all of Zoë’s books. Zoë has also appeared on TV and Radio and writes regularly for magazines and newspapers. Zoë has a Diploma in Diet & Nutrition and a Diploma in Clinical Weight Management, but she is first and foremost an obesity researcher. She has also found that the majority of nutritional information currently being taught (to dieticians and nutritionists) is wrong and that all dietary advisors need to be far more challenging and far less accepting of what they are being told. Solving the obesity epidemic relies upon such people, who really do want to make a difference, questioning their founding beliefs in the way that Zoë has done. Zoë’s personal experience has also proved invaluable in this journey – to have effectively done the Minnesota starvation experiment as a teenager provides an understanding that no text book can match. Researchers writing – “TCB1 Antagonism Exerts Specific Molecular Effects on Visceral and Subcutaneous Fat and Reverses Liver Steatosis in Diet-Induced Obese Mice“ – have no general understanding of obesity and likely have never even been on a diet or had first hand experience of the misery of overweight and hunger. Zoë has. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

This is the new, improved version of the recipe book so even if you already have the old version it's definitely worth getting. Much easier to find your old favourites (it's now organised by Phase) and lots of interesting new recipes, it's the ideal companion to the diet book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Recipe Book 9 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
This is a fantastic accompliment to 'The Harcombe Diet' books. I've been doing the diet for just over 4 weeks and have already lost 12 lbs... thanks to this book, I'm never 'stuck' for what to eat... as a lot of the recipes are simple and use basic ingredients, so you don't have to do a 'special shop' in order to have what you need for the recipes.
I've tried a few and they are delicious!!!!!!! The whole family can enjoy them too as well.
Thanks Zoe and Hubby!

5.0 out of 5 stars finally something that works! 26 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
This is the first time i've ever reviewed a book but the diet is so good i had to.
I've got both the diet book and the recipe book and have now been doing the diet for 10 weeks. I started at 13 stone 4 (i'm 5ft 7) and have now lost a stone and a half.
Like loads of other reviewers i've tried all sorts of other diets and mostly ended up losing a little and then putting a load back on when my will power ran out.
Phase 1 is hard, but i gave up alcohol and caffeine for a couple of weeks before i started and that seemed to really help with the headache issue - i've had really bad headaches doing previous 'detox' diets but didn't have that problem with phase 1.
During phase 2 (which i'm still on) i've managed to go out for dinner several times without putting a load back on. I did learn the hard way though that you can't drink rose wine with a fat meal- i didn't realise it was so sugary!
I feel so much better and my eating habits have totally changed - something i was sure wouldn't happen. I was hugely skeptical when i started the diet particularly about the idea that you could lose weight without doing any exercise. Anyway i don't do any regular exercise at the moment (something i now feel i have the energy to change) and have still managed to lose weight. i still can't quite believe it!

Bought this book after buying the 'stop counting calories' book by Zoe Harcombe.
I lent the book to a friend and then immediately missed it for all the great ideas on combining and creating different meals. I had to ask for it back.
I love searching the index for inspiration about meals, I have tried lots of the recipes and they are great.
I have followed the diet for almost 7 weeks now and I have lost 30lbs.... Yes.. 30lbs, I'm struggling to believe it myself. It takes willpower to stay on the straight and narrow for the first 5 days but the time goes quickly and the results are mindblowing. You have to experience it for yourself.
I'm a nurse and this regime goes against everything I have ever been taught about healthy eating and weight loss, I struggled to get my head around the concept but I'm eating large meals and not even thinking about food anymore and the weight is melting away.

5.0 out of 5 stars great recipes 14 Jan 2012

An online friend told me about the diet and thought I'd take a look. The book has lots of good vegetarian recipes which a lot of diets don't cater for; plenty for meat eaters too. look forward to trying some of the meals.

I bought this book after my wife read about zoe harcombe on a forum and its reference to food intolerances.i have a food intolerance and had a long standing weight problem of many years. after reading the book i started to implement the principles and have lost nearly three stone in weight in only three months. The biggest help was the explanation of the symptoms i could experience due to the toxins released during the process of weight loss. without this i would have given up. i feel better now than i have in twenty years. the format is clear and explains how the body uses foods. its not how much you eat but what you eat. i haven't felt hungry since changing my lifestyle.
