One of the wittiest writers around. ("Baltimore Sun")

Book Description

The Hopwicke Country House Hotel is to host an event for the all-male society, The Pillars of Sussex. Jude helps out on the night, and in the early hours of the morning she watches with relief as the rowdy guests drag themselves to their beds. The next morning, one young solicitor is absent from breakfast. But when Jude heads for Nigel Ackford’s room, presuming he is feeling the effects of the night before, she is horrified to find him hanging from the beams of his four-poster bed . . . Was it suicide? Jude has her doubts. Enlisting the support of her neighbour, Carole, she makes some tentative enquiries. It soon transpires that The Pillars of Sussex are involved in a conspiracy of misinformation. 'Brett, the celebrated crime writer, delivers another light-hearted, suspense filled success' Daily Express

3.0 out of 5 stars Will Justice Prevail? 14 Nov 2011
By Clive A. H. Still TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
The two supersleuths of Fethering, Jude and Carole, are drawn into yet another murder mystery when a young man is found hanged after a meeting of the Mason-like Society, The Pillars of Sussex. Jude has been waitressing at a local hotel to help out her old friend Suzy and sees the victim the evening before as he makes his very drunken way to bed.
Unable to believe he has committed suicide, she and Carole find themselves confronting a brick-wall of lies and false alibis and make harder work than usual of digging for evidence.
Simon Brett is always good on small town personalities and the misogyny perpetuated by organisations such as the Pillars of Sussex and this is a welcome addition to the Fethering series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dinner, Bed and perhaps not breakfast? 16 July 2010
By Joanne D'Arcy TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
I am not reading the Fethering series of books in any order and of all the ones I have read this is definitely a very good one - and a good place to start if you have never read any of Simon Brett's books before. My review assumes you enough though about the series main protagonists Carole and Jude and the local area, based in the West Sussex area, Worthing, Arundel to name a few.

Jude helps out at a prestigious local hotel owned by a long term friend, Suzy Longthorne. Through this friendship a bit more background is filled in about the mysterious Jude.

As Jude locks up the hotel for the night, she discovers one of that evenings dinner guests, has not quite made it to his bedroom. Jude being who she is helps Nigel Ackford into his room and bed. Only for the next morning to discover him hanging from the bed.

Everything points to suicide, but there is so many alibis and information flying about that it becomes difficult for Jude and obviously Carole (enlisted to help naturally!) to know the truth from the lies.

Simon Brett really has a good story here; with plenty of traditional detective story "red herrings" and characters not necessarily what they seem. One of the better Fethering Mysteries and well worth a read.
