Anybody who's seen the Handsome Family live will know that their studio albums only tell half the story.
Their songs are an entrancing blend of old time country and whacked out wonder, chronicling grim tales of death and disturbance but shot through with Rennie Sparks' childlike views on the Universe. Here sisters are bitten by snakes, deep dark waters claim swimmers and people fall asleep with blood on their teeth. And yet here, also, poodles think they're cowboys, cathedrals look like spaceships and the hills are littered with empty wheelchairs and discarded hearing aids in a land where we'll never grow old.
Imagine a supergroup consisting of Johnny Cash, Edward Gorey and Emo Phillips.
Live, you get the fantastic songs, but you also get the gloriously batty between tracks banter from husband and wife team Brett & Rennie. As far as I can recall from the two occasions when I've been to see them, it almost always arises as Brett is hunched over his drum machine, struggling to find the right track, guitar dangling heavily around his neck. Rennie fills the time with hilarious musings and anecdotes ( often about Brett: at one point he whimpers at her " I am in the f***in' room, you know ! " )
This album captures the spirit of my favourite live act, so of course I'm recommending it. I can't wait 'til they come back and when they do I'm bringing lots of my friends to see them. And the friends I brought to the last gig will be bringing lots of their friends too. Listen to this album and you'll undoubtedly feel the same way.

I feel somehow the Handsome Family music has changed my life a little. Some people regard their work as depressing I've heard say, but to the contrary, it is the World which is generally depressing, it's just The Handsome family and in particular Rennie Sparks lyrics have the handle on it. In fact it is uplifting and moving though still acknowledging the darker side of life. The music is gorgeous too and Brett Sparks' wonderful baritone voice just adds the gravy. The CD in question is a live performance as the title intimates. Some of the tracks are actually better in the live performance than the studio versions and you get Rennie and Brett's banter as a plus. It is wonderful - please buy it - they probably could do with the money as they appear impervious to pandering to commercial frippary and appear to remain refreshingly modest. Such beautiful, beautiful music. Previously I thought Schubert had the monopoly on this with his later sonatas. I am serious and considered when I tell you, the Handsome Family have their stake in this 'monopoly' also - amongst others maybe. This is the eighth album of theirs I have bought and there are no duds anywhere. How many other others can you say this about?

I saw them recently in Glasgow and when I saw this on Amazon I had to buy it. Glad I did because a lot of the same material was done at both gigs. Happy memories were invoked. Great stuff from two true originals.

One of the last ones I purchased but well worth the find. Superb content and numerous well delivered songs, just gets better and better the more you listen.

Amazing disc for fans and newcomers alike. 26 July 2002
By S. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
If youre a Handsome Family fan, you'll love this disc. The live arrangements sound great (although there's a bit too much reverb on Brett's voice), and the track selection is wide and varied, doing a good job of covering the first 3 discs. If anything, the live versions of the songs sound a bit *too* much like the studio versions which is a good and bad thing, really. But the real kicker here are the tracks of banter and anecdotes between Brett and Ronnie. They run the gamut from poignant to the downright hilarious, and are almost worth the price of the disc alone.
If you're new to the Handsome Family, this disc is a great introduction if you don't want to pick one particular studio album beforehand. While there's not much from their most recent album "Twilight", this live disc does a great job of cherrypicking some choice tracks from their first 3 discs that really give you a great feel for the Handsome Family sound. Lots of reverb, cheap keyboard drumlines, soft floaty organs, and deep accoustic guitar flutter along beneath Brett's sonorous voice singing backwoods death poems. There's really not much else like it today, and it only tenuously fits in the "insurgent country" movement it gets lumped into. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

creepy country 19 Oct 2005
By J. Holmes - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
country-tinged minor key gothic dirges with a low baritone singer and minimal instrumentation make this an intriguing and fairly creepy listen. it's like drinking beers with johnny cash and nick cave. things are not all sad and grim though, as the quirky duo show their lighthearted humor in the onstage banter. this cd suffers from an overlong tracklist. could have packed a better punch if trimmed down to about half the length; but this live album contains some wonderful and dark tunes and is a good representation of one of america's indie country bands.

gotta have their live show 15 July 2002

helluva an album. we've always known the sparks were great live and it's so nice to have a clean, mastered album that captures a sort of greatest hits effort of songs as well as hilarious rennie on stage. and brett's voice is so powerful. great record, love it.
